ETHEL MATHILDA ABLER Ethel M. Abler, age 77, of St. Nazianz, died Sunday evening, December 12, 1993, at St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 16, 1993, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, with burial in the church cemetery. She was born October 18, 1916, at St. Cloud, Wis., daughter of the late Gottlieb and Emma Pickard Bittner. She attended St. Mary's Springs High School in Fond du Lac and was formerly employed as a secretary for the John Miller Company, St. Nazianz. She married Stanley Abler September 2, 1935, at St. Cloud, Wis. She was a member of St. Gregory's Parish where she served on many various committees and donated many hours of service. ANNA ADELMAN Mrs. Louis Adelman Dies Unexpectedly Saturday Funeral rites were said today, Thursday for Mrs. Louis Adelman, 66, at St. Gregory's church, St. Nazianz, by the Rev. Frederick Dorn. Mrs. Adelman died Saturday night, after suffering a heart attack at the golden wedding celebration of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Wollersheim. The deceased was born January 6, 1889, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wollersheim, in Hewitt. She was married July 27, 1909, to Louis Adelman and since that time has lived on the family farm near St. Nazianz. LOUIS ADELMAN Louis Adelman, 72, of St. Nazianz died at the Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, Friday afternoon, following a month’s illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, with the Rev. Frederick Dorn officiating. Burial will be in the Church cemetery. He was born Sept. 21, 1883, on a farm two miles east of the village, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alois Adelman. He married Miss Anna Wollersheim July 27, 1909, and engaged in farming. He was a member of the Holy Name Society. His wife died six months ago. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. James Torrison of Valders, Mrs. Elmer Rabe of rural route, Kiel, Mrs. Francis Hoben of Osman, Mrs. Wilmer Gruber of Silverton, Ore., and Mrs. Ronald Gruber of Visalia, Calif.; son, Alphons on the homestead farm; brother, Leo of Manitowoc; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Wollersheim of Valders and Mrs. John Eigenberger of Sheboygan and ten grandchildren. NORMAN ADELMAN Rites Held Wednesday for Norman Adelman Funeral services for Norman Adelman, 33, were held Wednesday morning from St. Gregory's church in St. Nazianz. Mr. Adelman died Saturday at St. Nicholas hospital. The Rev. Frederick Dorn, SDS, officiated at the requiem mass and burial was made in the church cemetery. He was born September 30, 1920, in the town of Eaton. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Adelman. He attended public school in Eaton and St. Gregory's parochial school in St. Nazianz. June 27, 1953, he married Miss Violet Dedering, town of Schleswig. They lived in the township where he was engaged in farming. He was a member of the Holy Name society of St. Gregory's church. Survivors include his wife; his parents; one brother and five sisters. The deceased was sitting on a chair having a conversation with visiting neighbors when death intervened. ROSEMARY AHRENS Mrs. Myron Ahrens, 28, of Rt. 1, Kiel, died early Thursday morning at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan. Funeral services will be at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at Christianson Funeral Home, St. Nazianz, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The Rev. Cyril Dickrell will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Ahrens, nee Rosemary Schwoerer, was born Oct. 21, 1943, in the Town of Newton, daughter of the late Clemens Schwoerer and Olive Schnell Schwoerer. BARBARA ANHALT From 1928 newspaper clipping Funeral services for the late Mrs. Barbara Anhalt were held on Friday at St. Gregory's church, Rev. F. Holzknecht officiating. Six Riesterer boys acted as pall bearers. Mrs. Anhalt was born in Germany on December 23, eighty years ago, and came to this country with her parents at the age of four years. After her marriage to John Anhalt, they made their home on a farm near Millhome. Mr. Anhalt died in 1911. St. Nazianz has been the home of the deceased for the last eleven years. She has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. John Riesterer one mile west of the village, for the past two years, since she has been in poor health. Death came last Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The suvivors are eight daughters, Mrs. John Guese of Elkhart Lake, Mrs. John Bermke of Sheboygan Falls, Mrs. Fred Altenberger of Sheboygan, Mrs. Charles Mahloch of Manitowoc, Mrs. Isadore Meyer, Mrs. John Riesterer, Mrs. Ed. Schad, and Mrs. Alex Gerhard of this village; four sons, John Anhalt of Plymout, Frank of Millhome, and Peter and Joseph of here; fifty-eight grandchildren; and thirty-two great grandchildren. JOSEPH ANHALT Joseph Anhalt Dies at St. Nazianz Saturday Joseph Anhalt, 72, a resident of St. Nazianz for 36 years was found dead in his bed Saturday. He had been in good health until Thursday of last week, when he collapsed near his home. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Gregory's Catholic church, St. Nazianz with the Rev. Terrence Schmidt officiating. Mr. Anhalt was born September 8, 1883 at Millhome, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John and Borbara(sic) Knier Anhalt. He married Mrs. Fannie O'Neil of Green Bay November 13, 1943. He was a member of the Holy Name society of the church. Surviving him are his wife; a stepson; three sisters, Mrs. Alex Gerhard of St. Nazianz, Mrs. Carl Mahloch of Manitowoc and Mrs. Lena Altenberger of Sheboygan; and six step-grandchildren. KATHERINE ANHALT From Der Nord Westen, 14 Feb. 1889: on Sun. John Anhalt brought the body of his 16-year-old sister from Sheboygan where she had succumbed to diphtheria following an 8-day illness. PETER ANHALT Peter Anhalt, aged 67, residing on Valders R. 1, passed away at 3:30 a.m. on Friday at the Holy Family hospital in Manitowoc, after suffering injuries in a fall from his tractor two days before. Mr. Anhalt was born on January 4, 1878, near Millhome. November 5, 1907, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Schad of the town of Schleswig. The couple settled on a farm one mile northeast of St. Nazianz after their marriage, and made their home on that farm since. Survivors are his wife and four daughters; Mrs. Louis Heinzen of St. Nazianz; Anita of Los Angeles, Cal.; Hilaria of Manitowoc, and Mariann at home. Also surviving him are two brothers, John of Plymouth and Joseph of St. Nazianz, and also the following sisters; Mrs. John Gusse, Glenbeulah; Mrs. Fred Altenberger and Mrs. Carl Mahloch, Sheboygan; Mrs. John Bermke, Plymouth; Mrs. Isadore Meyer, Mrs. Edward Schad and Mrs. Alex Gerhardt of St. Nazianz. Three grandchildren also survive. JOSEPH N. BACKHAUS Joseph Backhaus, 69, of St. Nazianz, died Monday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at Christianson Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The Rev. MARCELLA C. BACKHAUS Marcella C. Backhaus, age 91, a resident of North Ridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center, Manitowoc, and formerly of St. Nazianz, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 11, 2004, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Gregory Coulthard with burial to follow at the church cemetery. Marcella was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Spring Valley, daughter of the late Andrew and Rose Willmas Seipel. On June 11, 1935, Marcella married Edmund Backhaus. he preceded her in death on March 14, 1983. Marcella grew up in the Spring Valley area, moving to St. Nazianz after marriage. She helped run their family business known as the Opera House in St. Nazianz. Marcella was a volunteer at the St. Nazianz Nutrition Site and the Salvatorian Center in New Holstein. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, one son and daughter-in-law, five grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Backhaus; one sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Matt Hauch; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Roman and Ledvina Seipel, Sylvester and Marion Seipel. The family will greet relatives and friends from 3 until 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15 at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Visitation will continue on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m. Marcella enjoyed playing cards several times a week and crocheting beautiful afghans for her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. HENRY BAER Henry Baer, 73, of Rt. 1, Valders, died Tuesday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 9:15 a.m. Friday at Christianson Funeral Home and 9:30 a.m. St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The Rev. Gregory Putzuer will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Baer was born May 30, 1898, in the Town of Eaton, son of the late Fredrick and Mary Niederpriem Baer. He married Hedwig Mayer April 26, 1932, at St. Nazianz. He farmed and hauled milk for the Nestle Plant at Valders for many years. He was a 50-year member of Catholic Order of Foresters. Survivors include his wife; four sons and three daughters; a brother, Joseph, of Irvington, N.J.: five sisters, Mrs. Henry Binversie, of St. Nazianz, Mrs. Clarence Escher, of New Holstein, Mrs. Arthur Stein, of Newton, Ann York, of Riverside, Ill., and Mrs. Emil Lulloff, of Rt. 3, Manitowoc; and four grandchildren. She attended St. Gregory's School and Kiel High School and farmed with her family in the town of Eaton. Her death followed a stroke which she suffered about 5 weeks ago. REV. LUDWIG BARTH From Der Nord Westen, 02 May 1907: (From the correspondent in St. Nazianz, 30 Apr.) Sad news reached here Friday that Rev. Louis Barth has died in a sanitarium in Dearborn, Michigan, where he has been ill for several weeks. Father Barth came here at age 19 with his mother and sisters from their former home of Louisville, Kentucky. Shortly after, he began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest on 27 June 1880 and spent about 20 years as Rector of St. Laurentius in Milwaukee… His body was shipped from Michigan to the St. Laurentius church in Milwaukee and yesterday was brought here to St. Nazianz. The large funeral procession was held today, Tuesday, with the Archbishop and 24 priests participating. The deceased reached the age of 54 and is survived by his sorrowing mother and 2 sisters –Mrs. J.C. Kustermann from here, and Mrs. Dr. L. Jermain of Milwaukee. ************* Single –son of Frederick Barth and Theresa Dietmeier –born Louisville, Kentucky –died Milwaukee, Wisconsin –"From Louisville, Kentucky, Father Louis Barth came to St. Nazianz at the end of 1872. After preliminary training there, he attended St. Francis Seminary, and was ordained on June 27, 1880. His first Mass was in St. Gregory's on July 4. After pastorates at Pine Bluff, Kieler, Waterloo, and Lancaster, he founded the St. Lawrence congregation in Milwaukee and built all the parish facilities in 1888." –from the Centennial Book, p. 64 – no county death record


THERESA BARTL Mrs. Joseph J. Bartel(sic), 64, died Tuesday afternoon at the farm home in the town of Liberty, two miles southeast of St. Nazianz. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. from St. Gregory's Catholic church in St. Nazianz. Mrs. Bartel, nee Theresia Leiderman, was born March 21, 1879 and came to this country and this county with her parents when she was one year old. She was married in 1902 and the couple lived first at Sheboygan before taking over the present farm in the town of Liberty. Survivors are the husband; four daughters, Ven. LOUIS BAUMGARTNER Louis Baumgartner, 79, postmaster at St. Nazianz for nearly 30 years, until his retirement seven years ago, died last night at his home in the village. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the St. Gregory's Catholic church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Baumgartner was born in 1859 in Sentheim, Germany. when an infant his parents came to tis country and located at St. Nazianz. His father was named postmaster of the village and the son assisted him in handling the postal business. When the elder Baumgartner resigned as postmaster his son, Louis, was appointed. He filled the position until 1931, when he retired. Mr. Baumgartner married Miss Rose Gerhard in St. Nazianz in 1884. The couple observed their golden wedding in 1934 at their home in St. Nazianz. Survivors are the widow, three sons, Anton and Joseph, St. Nazianz, Frank, Mishawaka, Ind.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Baumgartner was a member of the Holy Name society. Members will attend the funeral in a body and will meet at the Baumgartner home Wednesday evening at 7:30 to recite the rosary. REGINA BAUMGARTNER Mrs. J. Baumgartner Dies at Her Home Funeral services were held Wednesday for Mrs. Joseph Baumgartner, 71 of St Nazianz, who died Sunday evening at her home in the village. Services were held at St. Gregory Catholic Church with the Rev. Denis Cooney officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. She was born May 14, 1892, in the Town of Schleswig, daughter of the late Matthias and Theresa Merchen Loose. She was married September 2, 1912 to Joseph Baumgartner at St. Nazianz and the couple lived there since. She was a member of the Christian Mother’s Society of the church. ROSA BAUMGARTNER Mrs. Rosa Baumgartner, 90, resident of St. Nazianz for many years, died Friday morning in the village. She had been ill since July 4, 1953, and had fallen in September of 1955 fracturing her right hip. After a three months’ convalescence at a hospital she had made her home with a son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Baumgartner. Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the Kellenbenz Funeral Home, St. Nazianz, and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church in the village. The Rev. Frederick Dorn will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. The former Rosa Gerhard was born in the Town of Eaton Aug. 6, 1865, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gerhard. She was married to Louis Baumgartner Sept. 11, 1884, at St. Gregory Church by a brother, the Rev. Anton Gerhard. Mr. Baumgartner died March 13, 1939. Both Mr. and Mrs. Baumgartner operated the post office in the village for 50 years, retiring from the operation 40 years ago. Previous to that time Mr. Baumgartner’s father was the village postmaster from the time the United States Postal Department opened the post office. The couple observed the golden anniversary of its wedding in 1934. CORNELIUS J. BERRES Cornelius "Neil" Berres, age 91, of St. Nazianz, died at his winter residence in Crystal River, Fla., on Monday, Nov. 26, 2007. Mr. Berres was born on Dec. 3, 1915, in Boyd, son of the late John and Elizabeth (Ederer) Berres. He attended Twin Elders School in Two Creeks, and was a World War II Army veteran. He married Lucille Boury on June 5, 1948, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on June 17, 1988. Mr. Berres retired as a self- employed carpenter. He was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, and was also a past member of the St. Nazianz Village Board, St. Nazianz Lions Club, and Holy Name Society. He played saxophone for the 8 a.m. guitar Mass at St. Gregory's, and also at St. Benedict's and St. Scholastica's Catholic churches in Crystal River, Fla. Mr. Berres was also a past member of the St. Mary's Prayer Group. Neil loved being with his family, playing cards with family and friends, playing his saxophone and harmonica, and traveling to Florida for the winters. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) LINUS BINVERSIE (No newspaper named, Nov. 1973) Linus G. Binversie, 47, St. Nazianz, died of an apparent heart attack last Wednesday. Binversie, a former Kiel druggist, collapsed at his pharmacy at Valders and waa rushed to Holy Family Hospital in Manitowoc where he died shortly thereafter. He was born in the Town of Meeme on October 20, 1926, son of Matthew and the late Margaret Endries Binversie. He graduated from Kiel High School in 1945. He was graduated from the University of Wisconsin and became a registered pharmacist. He operated the Kiel Pharmacy before going to Valders in 1962. He married Dorothy Thomey of Kenosh on October 17, 1953. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was past president of the St. Gregory Parish Council and was presently serving on the Parish Projects Committee. Surviving are his wife; three sons, five daughters; four brothers, and three sisters. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Gregory Church with the Reverend Cyril Dickrell, pastor, officiating. JEANETTE L. BLATZ Jeanette "Netty" L. Blatz, 56, of St. Nazianz, died Saturday afternoon, August 29, 1992, at her home, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the former Jeanette Rabe, born July 14, 1936, in the Town of Schleswig, daughter of the late Alvin Sr. and Helen Vogel Rabe. She was a 1954 graduate of Kiel High School. On June 30, 1956, she married Eugene Blatz at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. She was employed at Tecumseh Products, New Holstein, for 71/2 years. The couple also operated Blatz's Bar in School Hill for three years. For the past nine years, she was employed at Lakeside Packing, Manitowoc. She was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz and the Christian Mothers. Survivors include her husband Eugene, five sons, two daughters, 13 grandchildren; four brothers; brothers and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her step-mother, Ruby Rabe. CLARA GERBER ELLIOTT BOLL Clara M. Gerber Elliott Boll 97, of 105 S. 6th Avenue, St. Nazianz, died Friday morning, April 15, 2011 at her residence. She was born on February 19, 1914 in Dakota, Illinois, daughter of the late Paul & Martha (Steiman) Gerber. In 1934 she married Dallas Elliott and he preceded her in death in 1942. She then married Edward Boll in 1964 and he preceded her in death in 1983. Clara spent many years as a dental assistant in St. Nazianz. She enjoyed gardening, playing sheepshead and bingo. Clara was an avid Packers & Brewers fan. "Fritz" Bonde Sr., age 80, of 9622 Pigeon Lake Rd., Valders, died Wednesday afternoon, June 28, 2006 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 6, 1926 in the Town of Meeme, son of the late Theodore and Genevieve (Baugniet) Bonde. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a 3rd class Seaman. On February 14, 1946 he married the former Katherine Holzer at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. She preceded him in death on April 14, 2002. Fritz and Kate farmed in the Town of Liberty for many years an also owned and operated Okee Dookee Lodge at Pigeon Lake from 1972 to 1984. Fritz was an avid sportsman enjoying hunting, sturgeon fishing, playing cards and bird watching. He was a charter member and past commander of the American Legion Post 477, Town of Liberty Supervisor for 6 years, chairman of the Town of Libety for 34 years, member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church, charter member of the Pigeon Lake Sportsman Club, member of St. Nazianz Lions Club and other service organizations. MICHAEL BREU St. Nazianz Funeral services for Michael Breu, who died at his home in Sheboygan last Friday of an attack of paralysis, were held here Monday morning, solemn requiem mass being read by three priests of St. Gregory's church. Interment was in the nearby church cemetery. The deceased was born in the town of Manitowoc Rapids Oct. 19, 1858, but his home had been St. Nazianz until six years ago, when he moved to Sheboygan to be employed at the Northern Furniture Co. He was married in 1888 to Miss Francis Zipperer, who survives him. ELMER BROCKER Elmer Brocker, 57, of Route 1, Kiel, died Sunday at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, following a lingering illness. He was born September 3, 1915, in the Town of Eaton, Manitowoc County, the son of Mrs. Ida Ninmer Brocker and the late George Brocker. On January 22, 1938, he married the former LaVerne Schmitz at Chilton. After marriage, the couple farmed in Eaton until 1957. He was employed by Sperber and Krueger Logging of rural Kiel from 1967 to 1972 and at the present time was an employee of the Salvatorian Center, New Holstein. The Reverend Cyril Dickrell, pastor of St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, officiated. LAVERNE R. BROCKER LaVerne R. Brocker age 86, formerly of rural Kiel, died on Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at Chilton Care Center in Chilton. She was born Dec. 24, 1918 in New Holstein, daughter of the late Joseph and Emma (Wick) Schmitz. She attended St. Anna Catholic School and Kiel High School. LaVerne married Elmer Brocker on Jan. 22, 1938 in Chilton. He preceded her in death in 1973. She was ahomemaker and was employed at Leverenz Shoe Company in Valders for 27 years. LaVerne was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz. LaVerne was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and since her retirement, she enjoyed watching and feeding her outdoor birds, painting landscapes, decorating gourds, watching her daily "soap", doing crossword puzzles and visiting with her friends and neighbors. Survivors include her children, 10 granchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law. LaVerne is further survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends. She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Eleanor, Julie, Valeria, Emily and Irene; and four brothers, Leo, Lee, Jerome, and infant brother, Ervin. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, at St. Gregory Catholic Church, 212 Church St. in St. Nazianz with the Rev. Gregory Coulthard officiating. Burial will follow in the Parish Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday when services will be held. A memorial fund has been established in the name of LaVerne R. She was married to Wm. Broecker in 1912. She leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Kautzer, her husband, and seven small children, 3 sons and 4 daughters, the oldest being 12 years. ALPHONSE BROECKERT Alfonse Peter (child –March 12, 1917-Oct. 4, 1920 son of Edward Broeckert and Clara Gutman –died from "infection of 5th and 7th cranial nerves following a fall in which 4 front upper teeth were loosened –paralysis of throat") *********** Alfons Broeckert Death entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Broeckert Monday afternoon, and took from them their beloved son Alfons, aged four years. He took sick last week Thursday, with paralysis and pneumonia, which caused his death. ARTHUR JOHN BROECKERT Arthur J. Broeckert, 81, of 105 N. First Ave., St. Nazianz, died unexpectedly, Saturday evening, May 17, 2003, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc, shortly after being admitted. He was born August 31, 1921, in St. Nazianz, son of the late Edward and Clara Gutman Broeckert. Arthur was a 1940 graduate of Valders High School and continued his education in Milwaukee where he attended Auto Mechanic School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. On June 11, 1955 he married Joan Wagner at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Arthur owned Broeckert Bros. Auto Service in St. Nazianz from 1952 until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, a member of the St. Nazianz American Legion, Post 477, Wagner, Eberle, Sukowaty and retired from the St. Nazianz Fire Department where he was a member for 40 years. Arthur enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and working in his yard. Survivors include his wife, Joan; two children, granchildren, four brothers, one sister, three brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law. He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz with the Rev. Robert Wagner, brother-in-law and Rev. Gregory Coulthard officiating. EDWARD BROECKERT Edward Broeckert, who at 71 years of age still operated his own blacksmith shop and thus was the oldest businessman in St. Nazianz, died suddenly of a heart attack at St. Nazianz Friday afternoon. He was born on Jan. 16, 1886, in the Town of Schleswig, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Broeckert. On Feb. 22, 1911, he moved to St. Nazianz where he established and operated his blacksmith business ever since. On June 4, 1912, he was married to Clara Gutman at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in St. Nazianz. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held at St. Gregory's Catholic Church at St. Nazianz at 9:30 Monday morning, following brief services at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home at Kiel. The Rev. Denis Cooney wil be the celebrant of the requiem mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home from 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon until time of services. REMBERT J. 'HUMPY' BROECKERT Rembert J. "Humpy" Broeckert, age 92, formerly of St. Nazianz, currently residing at St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc, died on Tuesday morning, Jan. 15, 2008, at St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc. He was born on May 22, 1915, in St. Nazianz, son of the late Edward and Clara (Gutman) Broeckert. Humpy attended St. Gregory School. On Sept. 2, 1945, he married the former Angeline Willmas at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. She preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1995. He was employed by Manitowoc Shipbuilding as a blacksmith from 1936 to 1946. He worked for his dad for a couple of years in the blacksmith shop in St. Nazianz. He was employed by Miller Implement of St. Nazianz as a salesman and mechanic for many years. Humpy was also the sexton at St. Gregory Cemetery from 1981 to 1991. He was the first village treasurer in St. Nazianz; was general chairman of the St. Nazianz Centennial in 1954; and was a charter member and president of the Lion's Club. Humpy also organized the St. Nazianz Fire Department in 1946 and served as fire chief for 32 years. He helped organize the countywide Firefighters Association and also held offices in regional and state firefighters organizations. Humpy also played baseball in the Manitowoc County League and managed the St. Nazianz team. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) WILLIAM BROECKERT William P. Broeckert, 85, of Elkhart Lake died Sunday at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. George Catholic Church, Elkhart Lake with the Rev. Edwin Grzendzielewski, pastor, celebrant of the requiem Mass. Burial was in St. Gregory Cemetery, St. Nazianz. Born February 4, 1884 in the Town of Schleswig, Mr. Broeckert was a son of the late Frederick and Katherina Loos Broeckert. He married the former Emily Kautzer of the Town of Eaton at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz October 4, 1912. The couple settled on the Broeckert homestead farm in the Town of Schleswig, which he operated until retiring in 1953. Since that time he resided with a daughter at Elkhart Lake. In December he became a resident at the Anna M. Reiss Home until he was hospitalized two weeks ago. Mrs. Broeckert died April 27, 1925. A member of St. George Catholic Church, and a charter member of the Catholic Knights, Kiel branch, Mr. Broeckert was a former supervisor and district school board member in the Town of Schleswig. Survivors include four daughters, three sons, 28 grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. ANNA BRUNMEIER Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Brunmeier, former county resident who died in a Fond du Lac hospital Monday, will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. from the St. Gregory's Catholic church at St. Nazianz, the Rev. Fintan Holzknecht officiating. Mrs. Brunmeier, nee Anna Casper, was born at St. Nazianz in in 1878 and was married to August Brunmeier in 1898. They located on a farm in Liberty, east of St. Mazianz. Mr. Brunmeier died in 1914 and she later moved into St. Nazianz. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Michael Bolz of Hayton, Mrs. Edmund Lettenberger of Milwaukee, Mrs. Arthur Patten of West Allis; son, Arnold, of Milwaukee; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Crowe of Sheboygan, Mrs. Mona Apostel of Chicago; six brothers, John of St. Nazianz, Anthony of New York, Frank of Plymouth, Joseph of Cleveland, Wis., Robert of Shawano, Edward of Sheboygan. JOSEPH C. BRUNMEIER Joseph Brunmeier, aged 82, died at the home of his son, Henry, who resides about two and one-half miles southwest of St. Nazianz, on Thursday morning at 11:45 o'clock. Funeral services were conducted at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the St. Gregory Catholic church at St. Nazianz, with the Rev. Fintan Holzknecht (flaw, missing words) and burial was made at the adjoining church cemetery. The Holy Name society, of which the deceased was a member, attended the services in a body. Mr. Brunmeier was born in Liberty township on December 17, 1857. November 5, 1884 he was married to Miss Margaret Wimmer, and the couple celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last year. Following their marriage, the couple located on the farm now occupied by their son Henry. In 1915 they moved to St. Nazianz, where for a number of years Mr. Brunmeier was janitor at the St. Gregory's church. Due to Mr. Brunmeier's death, he and his wife returned to their homestead farm to reside with their son in November 1939. He is survived by the following: His widow; two adopted sons, Henry, on the homestead, and Anton, who lives in Seattle, Washington; two adopted daughters, Mrs. Edward Keller of Brillion, and Mrs. Peter Leschke of Osman; two brothers, Ernest of Cleveland and Frank of California; one sister, Mrs. Anton Kerscher of Manitowoc, and 13 grandchildren. ********** Joseph C. NORBERT J. BRUNMEIER Norbert J. Brunmeier, 82, of River's Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Manitowoc died on Aug. 7, 2006, at River's Bend. A memorial service was on Tuesday at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand Avenue in Manitowoc. Officiating was the Rev. Monsignor James Vanden Hogen, with burial of the remains at St. Gregory Parish Cemetery in St. Nazianz. Norbert was born on March 23, 1924, at St. Nazianz. He was the son of the late Henry and Margaret Braun Brunmeier. He had been employed with Manitowoc Cranes for many years. Norbert was a member of St. Francis of Assisi. FRANK P. BRUNNER Frank Brunner, 88, formerly of St. Nazianz, died Monday morning at St. Agnes Hospital, Fond du Lac. Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at Christianson Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The Rev. Gregory Putzer, S.D.D., will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Brunner was born Oct. 19, 1883, at Kellnersville, son of the late Michael and Mary Augustin Brunner. He was a carpenter by trade. He married Mary Bogenscheutz June 13, 1911, at St. Wendel Catholic Church, Osman. Mr. Brunner was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Catholic Knights. His wife preceded him in death in 1933. MARY BRUNNER St. Nazianz Mrs. Frank Brunner died suddenly at her home at St. Nazianz after one day's illness. Born Mary Bogenschuetz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bogenschuetz, in the town of Centerville, on April 6, 1888, she was married on June 13, 1911, to Frank Brunner at St. Wendel. They located on a farm near St. Wendel, where they remained for a few years, and then went to Osman. In 1926, they moved to St. Nazianz. Besides her husband, Mrs. Brunner is survived by the following children; Martin, Adrian, Mary, Anton, Thekla, Joseph, William, and Angeline. Two sons died in infancy. She is also survived by her mother in Milwaukee; two brothers, Andrew of St. Wendel, and Fred of Centerville. A sister died six years ago. Funeral services were held in St. Gregory's church at 10 a.m., Wednesday, and burial was in the church cemetery. A vigil mass was conducted Tuesday evening. IGNATZ BURKARD Plan Last Rites On Tuesday For Baker At St. Nazianz Church Ignatz Burkard, well-known St. Nazianz baker, passed away at his home there at 8:15 p.m. last Friday from a sudden heart attack. The deceased was engaged in his regular work until about fifteen minutes prior to the heart attack. Some weeks ago he had a brief illness at which time it was learned that his heart was affected, but his death was sudden and unexpected. Mr. Burkard was born January 20, 1869 in the village of Buehl, Baden, Germany. At the age of 25 years he came to this country and made his home for some time with his brother, Anton, in the town of Eaton. Later he secured a position as cook at a seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he lived for two years. In 1902 he bought the property in St. Nazianz, which since served as his residence and bakery. On November 30, 1912 he was married to Miss Susan Platten of St. Nazianz by the Rev. Epiphanius Deibele at St. Gregory's church. Survivors are his widow and several nieces and nephews. His brother, Anton, preceded him in death December 16, 1939. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning at St. Gregory's Catholic church, with the Rev. Fintan Holzknecht officiating. Burial was made in the adjoining St. Nazianz church cemetery. Members of the Catholic Order of Forsters of St. Nazianz, of which court he was a member, attended the funeral services in a body. After living in Milwaukee for one year, the family moved to St. Nazianz. When Mr. Burkart was twenty-five, he came to Sheboygan to live. On April 26, 1887, at Holy Name Church, he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Fritz, who had come to America in 1884. Mrs. Burkart was born in Wurttemberg, Germany, June 26, 1863. They lived here for six years after they were married and then moved to St. Nazianz. In 1909 they purchased a farm southeast of the village, where they still reside with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Neumeyer. Twelve children were born to this union, eight of whom survive. They are: Peter of Sumatra, Mont., Frank of Elkhart Lake, Anna, Anton and Mrs. Nic Schnettler of this city. George of Manitowoc, Louis and Mrs. Herbert Neumeyer of St. Nazianz. There are also thirty-seven grandchildren. GEORGE BURKART George Burkart Dies At Manitowoc Wednesday Funeral services for George Burkart, 58, were held Friday at St. Gregory's church in St. Nazianz, with the Rev. Frederick Dorn as the celebrant at the requiem high mass. Mr. Burkhart died Wednesday in Manitowoc. The pallbearers, were all nephews of the deceased. ANTON BUSHMAN Anton Bushman, 46, former resident of School Hill, died Monday morning in a Milwaukee hospital of injuries received when his car collided with an inteurban train in Milwaukee last Thursday. Mrs. Bushman, the former Rose Diem of St. Nazianz, who was in the car with her husband at the time of the accident, is in critical condition in a Milwaukee hospital. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at nine o'clock from the St. Gregory Catholic church at St. Nazianz. Burial will be made in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Fred Diem home, two miles west of St. Nazianz, until the time of the funeral. Mr. Bushman was born in School Hill September 17, 1890. He was married to Miss Diem in 1912. Survivors, besides the widow, include two daughters, Myrtle and Kathleen at home; three sons, Eugene and Woodrow at home and Osbert of St. Nazianz; three brothers, John of California, Peter of Arpin and Andrew of Manitowoc; and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Christel of Kiel and Mrs. George Diem of California. FRANCIS X. BUSHMAN Francis X. Bushman, 47, of Kuwait City, Kuwait, died Saturday morning of a coronary attack, at the home of his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.C. (Hart) Pankratz, of Rt.1, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Christianson Funeral Home and at 10:00 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The Rev. Gregory Putzer will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Bushman was born Oct. 21, 1922, at St. Nazianz, son of Frank and Stephiana Horn Bushman. He was graduated from Valders High School in 1940 and the University of Illinois in 1947. He married Marjorie Pankratz May 14, 1949, at Burlington, Wis. Prior to his death, he was consulting engineer for the Kuwait government where he had been presently residing. He enlisted in the Navy in 1941, and was a lieutenant in the inactive Naval Reserve. He was a member of the school board in Kuwait City, also a member of the National Water Well Assn. and the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife; three sons, two daughters, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bushman, of St. Nazianz; three brothers, and four sisters.
