ANNA ADELMAN Mrs. Louis Adelman Dies Unexpectedly Saturday Funeral rites were said today, Thursday for Mrs. Louis Adelman, 66, at St. Gregory's church, St. Nazianz, by the Rev. Frederick Dorn. Mrs. Adelman died Saturday night, after suffering a heart attack at the golden wedding celebration of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Wollersheim. The deceased was born January 6, 1889, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wollersheim, in Hewitt. She was married July 27, 1909, to Louis Adelman and since that time has lived on the family farm near St. Nazianz. NORMAN ADELMAN Rites Held Wednesday for Norman Adelman Funeral services for Norman Adelman, 33, were held Wednesday morning from St. Gregory's church in St. Nazianz. Mr. Adelman died Saturday at St. Nicholas hospital. The Rev. Frederick Dorn, SDS, officiated at the requiem mass and burial was made in the church cemetery. He was born September 30, 1920, in the town of Eaton. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Adelman. He attended public school in Eaton and St. Gregory's parochial school in St. Nazianz. June 27, 1953, he married Miss Violet Dedering, town of Schleswig. They lived in the township where he was engaged in farming. He was a member of the Holy Name society of St. Gregory's church. Survivors include his wife; his parents; one brother and five sisters. The deceased was sitting on a chair having a conversation with visiting neighbors when death intervened. BARBARA ANHALT From 1928 newspaper clipping Funeral services for the late Mrs. Barbara Anhalt were held on Friday at St. Gregory's church, Rev. F. Holzknecht officiating. Six Riesterer boys acted as pall bearers. Mrs. Anhalt was born in Germany on December 23, eighty years ago, and came to this country with her parents at the age of four years. After her marriage to John Anhalt, they made their home on a farm near Millhome. Mr. Anhalt died in 1911. St. Nazianz has been the home of the deceased for the last eleven years. She has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. John Riesterer one mile west of the village, for the past two years, since she has been in poor health. Death came last Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The suvivors are eight daughters, Mrs. John Guese of Elkhart Lake, Mrs. John Bermke of Sheboygan Falls, Mrs. Fred Altenberger of Sheboygan, Mrs. Charles Mahloch of Manitowoc, Mrs. Isadore Meyer, Mrs. John Riesterer, Mrs. Ed. Schad, and Mrs. Alex Gerhard of this village; four sons, John Anhalt of Plymout, Frank of Millhome, and Peter and Joseph of here; fifty-eight grandchildren; and thirty-two great grandchildren. JOSEPH ANHALT Joseph Anhalt Dies at St. Nazianz Saturday Joseph Anhalt, 72, a resident of St. Nazianz for 36 years was found dead in his bed Saturday. He had been in good health until Thursday of last week, when he collapsed near his home. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Gregory's Catholic church, St. Nazianz with the Rev. Terrence Schmidt officiating. Mr. Anhalt was born September 8, 1883 at Millhome, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John and Borbara(sic) Knier Anhalt. He married Mrs. Fannie O'Neil of Green Bay November 13, 1943. He was a member of the Holy Name society of the church. Surviving him are his wife; a stepson; three sisters, Mrs. Alex Gerhard of St. Nazianz, Mrs. Carl Mahloch of Manitowoc and Mrs. Lena Altenberger of Sheboygan; and six step-grandchildren. KATHERINE ANHALT From Der Nord Westen, 14 Feb. 1889: on Sun. John Anhalt brought the body of his 16-year-old sister from Sheboygan where she had succumbed to diphtheria following an 8-day illness. PETER ANHALT Peter Anhalt, aged 67, residing on Valders R. 1, passed away at 3:30 a.m. on Friday at the Holy Family hospital in Manitowoc, after suffering injuries in a fall from his tractor two days before. Mr. Anhalt was born on January 4, 1878, near Millhome. November 5, 1907, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Schad of the town of Schleswig. The couple settled on a farm one mile northeast of St. Nazianz after their marriage, and made their home on that farm since. Survivors are his wife and four daughters; Mrs. Louis Heinzen of St. Nazianz; Anita of Los Angeles, Cal.; Hilaria of Manitowoc, and Mariann at home. Also surviving him are two brothers, John of Plymouth and Joseph of St. Nazianz, and also the following sisters; Mrs. John Gusse, Glenbeulah; Mrs. Fred Altenberger and Mrs. Carl Mahloch, Sheboygan; Mrs. John Bermke, Plymouth; Mrs. Isadore Meyer, Mrs. Edward Schad and Mrs. Alex Gerhardt of St. Nazianz. Three grandchildren also survive. JOSEPH N. BACKHAUS Joseph Backhaus, 69, of St. Nazianz, died Monday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at Christianson Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The Rev. Cyril Dickrell will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Mr. Backhaus was born Nov. 19, 1903, at St. Nazianz, son of the late Nick and Catherine Schwoerer Backhaus. He married Florentine Schuler Sept. 14, 1926, at St. Nazianz. He operated the Chrysler Plymouth Garage at St. Nazianz for about 50 years. He had been very active in St. Nazianz village civic affairs. MARCELLA C. BACKHAUS Marcella C. Backhaus, age 91, a resident of North Ridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center, Manitowoc, and formerly of St. Nazianz, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 11, 2004, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Gregory Coulthard with burial to follow at the church cemetery. Marcella was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Spring Valley, daughter of the late Andrew and Rose Willmas Seipel. On June 11, 1935, Marcella married Edmund Backhaus. he preceded her in death on March 14, 1983. Marcella grew up in the Spring Valley area, moving to St. Nazianz after marriage. She helped run their family business known as the Opera House in St. Nazianz. Marcella was a volunteer at the St. Nazianz Nutrition Site and the Salvatorian Center in New Holstein. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, one son and daughter-in-law, five grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Backhaus; one sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Matt Hauch; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Roman and Ledvina Seipel, Sylvester and Marion Seipel. The family will greet relatives and friends from 3 until 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15 at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Visitation will continue on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m. Marcella enjoyed playing cards several times a week and crocheting beautiful afghans for her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was born July 26, 1935 in the town of Eaton, daughter of the late Henry and Hattie Mayer Baer. She attended St. Gregory's School and Kiel High School and farmed with her family in the town of Eaton. REV. LUDWIG BARTH From Der Nord Westen, 02 May 1907: (From the correspondent in St. Nazianz, 30 Apr.) Sad news reached here Friday that Rev. Louis Barth has died in a sanitarium in Dearborn, Michigan, where he has been ill for several weeks. Father Barth came here at age 19 with his mother and sisters from their former home of Louisville, Kentucky. Shortly after, he began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest on 27 June 1880 and spent about 20 years as Rector of St. Laurentius in Milwaukee… His body was shipped from Michigan to the St. Laurentius church in Milwaukee and yesterday was brought here to St. Nazianz. The large funeral procession was held today, Tuesday, with the Archbishop and 24 priests participating. The deceased reached the age of 54 and is survived by his sorrowing mother and 2 sisters –Mrs. J.C. Kustermann from here, and Mrs. Dr. L. Jermain of Milwaukee. ************* Single –son of Frederick Barth and Theresa Dietmeier –born Louisville, Kentucky –died Milwaukee, Wisconsin –"From Louisville, Kentucky, Father Louis Barth came to St. Nazianz at the end of 1872. After preliminary training there, he attended St. Francis Seminary, and was ordained on June 27, 1880. His first Mass was in St. Gregory's on July 4. REGINA BAUMGARTNER Mrs. J. Baumgartner Dies at Her Home Funeral services were held Wednesday for Mrs. Joseph Baumgartner, 71 of St Nazianz, who died Sunday evening at her home in the village. Services were held at St. Gregory Catholic Church with the Rev. Denis Cooney officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. She was born May 14, 1892, in the Town of Schleswig, daughter of the late Matthias and Theresa Merchen Loose. She was married September 2, 1912 to Joseph Baumgartner at St. Nazianz and the couple lived there since. She was a member of the Christian Mother’s Society of the church. LINUS BINVERSIE (No newspaper named, Nov. 1973) Linus G. Binversie, 47, St. Nazianz, died of an apparent heart attack last Wednesday. Binversie, a former Kiel druggist, collapsed at his pharmacy at Valders and waa rushed to Holy Family Hospital in Manitowoc where he died shortly thereafter. He was born in the Town of Meeme on October 20, 1926, son of Matthew and the late Margaret Endries Binversie. He graduated from Kiel High School in 1945. He was graduated from the University of Wisconsin and became a registered pharmacist. He operated the Kiel Pharmacy before going to Valders in 1962. He married Dorothy Thomey of Kenosh on October 17, 1953. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was past president of the St. Gregory Parish Council and was presently serving on the Parish Projects Committee. Surviving are his wife; three sons, five daughters; four brothers, and three sisters. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Gregory Church with the Reverend Cyril Dickrell, pastor, officiating. THERESIA BIRKLE Mrs. T. Birkle Is Called To Rest After An Illness Mrs. Theresa Birkle, nee Miss Theresa Strupp, passed away at 9 a.m., Monday, at the home of Mrs. Catherine Kautzer, with whom she had made her home for 14 years, following an illness of six months' duration Deceased was born October 15, 1854, in Manitowoc county, and was united in marriage with William Birkle of St. Nazianz, who preceded her in death in 1921. Survivors are one son, County Clerk William W. Birkle of Sheboygan, and one sister, Mrs. Frank Ahrends of Sheboygan. Funeral services were conducted this Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the St. Gregory Catholic church in St. Nazianz, with the Rev. Fintan Holzknecht officiating. JEANETTE L. BLATZ Jeanette "Netty" L. Blatz, 56, of St. Nazianz, died Saturday afternoon, August 29, 1992, at her home, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the former Jeanette Rabe, born July 14, 1936, in the Town of Schleswig, daughter of the late Alvin Sr. and Helen Vogel Rabe. She was a 1954 graduate of Kiel High School. On June 30, 1956, she married Eugene Blatz at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. She was employed at Tecumseh Products, New Holstein, for 71/2 years. The couple also operated Blatz's Bar in School Hill for three years. For the past nine years, she was employed at Lakeside Packing, Manitowoc. She was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz and the Christian Mothers. Survivors include her husband Eugene, five sons, two daughters, 13 grandchildren; four brothers; brothers and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her step-mother, Ruby Rabe. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, with the Rev. Leonard Walker, pastor, officiating, preceded by brief family rites at 10:15 a.m. at Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, April 18, 2002 at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Gregory Coulthard with burial to follow in the Church Cemetery. Katie was born on May 7, 1926 in St. Nazianz, the daughter of the late Herman and Magdalen Schwoerer Holzer. She graduated from St. Gregory School and Valders High School. Katie married Frederick F. Bond Sr. on February 14, 1946 in St. Nazianz. Katie and Fritz farmed in the Town of Liberty for many years and also owned and operated the Okee Dookee Lodge at Pigeon Lake from 1972 until 1984. She was a Charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 477 and Past President of Manitowoc County Extension Homemakers Association. She was a member of St. Gregory's Christian Mothers, Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and Manitowoc County 4H Leader. Katie enjoyed birdwatching, knitting, and her weekly Tuesday afternoon cribbage gatherings. Survivors include her husband Fritz Bonde, two sons and daughters-in-law; one daughter and son-in-law; eight grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law; one sister and brother-in-law and other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. MICHAEL BREU St. Nazianz Funeral services for Michael Breu, who died at his home in Sheboygan last Friday of an attack of paralysis, were held here Monday morning, solemn requiem mass being read by three priests of St. Gregory's church. Interment was in the nearby church cemetery. The deceased was born in the town of Manitowoc Rapids Oct. 19, 1858, but his home had been St. Nazianz until six years ago, when he moved to Sheboygan to be employed at the Northern Furniture Co. He was married in 1888 to Miss Francis Zipperer, who survives him. ELMER BROCKER Elmer Brocker, 57, of Route 1, Kiel, died Sunday at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, following a lingering illness. He was born September 3, 1915, in the Town of Eaton, Manitowoc County, the son of Mrs. Ida Ninmer Brocker and the late George Brocker. On January 22, 1938, he married the former LaVerne Schmitz at Chilton. After marriage, the couple farmed in Eaton until 1957. He was employed by Sperber and Krueger Logging of rural Kiel from 1967 to 1972 and at the present time was an employee of the Salvatorian Center, New Holstein. LAVERNE R. BROCKER LaVerne R. Brocker age 86, formerly of rural Kiel, died on Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at Chilton Care Center in Chilton. She was born Dec. 24, 1918 in New Holstein, daughter of the late Joseph and Emma (Wick) Schmitz. She attended St. Anna Catholic School and Kiel High School. LaVerne married Elmer Brocker on Jan. 22, 1938 in Chilton. He preceded her in death in 1973. She was ahomemaker and was employed at Leverenz Shoe Company in Valders for 27 years. LaVerne was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz. LaVerne was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and since her retirement, she enjoyed watching and feeding her outdoor birds, painting landscapes, decorating gourds, watching her daily "soap", doing crossword puzzles and visiting with her friends and neighbors. Survivors include her children, 10 granchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law. LaVerne is further survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends. She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Eleanor, Julie, Valeria, Emily and Irene; and four brothers, Leo, Lee, Jerome, and infant brother, Ervin. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, at St. Gregory Catholic Church, 212 Church St. in St. Nazianz with the Rev. Gregory Coulthard officiating. ARTHUR JOHN BROECKERT Arthur J. Broeckert, 81, of 105 N. First Ave., St. Nazianz, died unexpectedly, Saturday evening, May 17, 2003, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc, shortly after being admitted. He was born August 31, 1921, in St. Nazianz, son of the late Edward and Clara Gutman Broeckert. Arthur was a 1940 graduate of Valders High School and continued his education in Milwaukee where he attended Auto Mechanic School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. On June 11, 1955 he married Joan Wagner at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Arthur owned Broeckert Bros. Auto Service in St. Nazianz from 1952 until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, a member of the St. Nazianz American Legion, Post 477, Wagner, Eberle, Sukowaty and retired from the St. Nazianz Fire Department where he was a member for 40 years. Arthur enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and working in his yard. Survivors include his wife, Joan; two children, granchildren, four brothers, one sister, three brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law. He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother. EDWARD BROECKERT Edward Broeckert, who at 71 years of age still operated his own blacksmith shop and thus was the oldest businessman in St. Nazianz, died suddenly of a heart attack at St. Nazianz Friday afternoon. He was born on Jan. 16, 1886, in the Town of Schleswig, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Broeckert. On Feb. 22, 1911, he moved to St. Nazianz where he established and operated his blacksmith business ever since. On June 4, 1912, he was married to Clara Gutman at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in St. Nazianz. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held at St. Gregory's Catholic Church at St. Nazianz at 9:30 Monday morning, following brief services at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home at Kiel. The Rev. WILLIAM BROECKERT William P. Broeckert, 85, of Elkhart Lake died Sunday at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. George Catholic Church, Elkhart Lake with the Rev. Edwin Grzendzielewski, pastor, celebrant of the requiem Mass. Burial was in St. Gregory Cemetery, St. Nazianz. Born February 4, 1884 in the Town of Schleswig, Mr. Broeckert was a son of the late Frederick and Katherina Loos Broeckert. He married the former Emily Kautzer of the Town of Eaton at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz October 4, 1912. The couple settled on the Broeckert homestead farm in the Town of Schleswig, which he operated until retiring in 1953. Since that time he resided with a daughter at Elkhart Lake. In December he became a resident at the Anna M. Reiss Home until he was hospitalized two weeks ago. Mrs. Broeckert died April 27, 1925. A member of St. George Catholic Church, and a charter member of the Catholic Knights, Kiel branch, Mr. Broeckert was a former supervisor and district school board member in the Town of Schleswig. JOSEPH C. BRUNMEIER Joseph Brunmeier, aged 82, died at the home of his son, Henry, who resides about two and one-half miles southwest of St. Nazianz, on Thursday morning at 11:45 o'clock. Funeral services were conducted at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the St. Gregory Catholic church at St. Nazianz, with the Rev. Fintan Holzknecht (flaw, missing words) and burial was made at the adjoining church cemetery. The Holy Name society, of which the deceased was a member, attended the services in a body. Mr. Brunmeier was born in Liberty township on December 17, 1857. November 5, 1884 he was married to Miss Margaret Wimmer, and the couple celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last year. Following their marriage, the couple located on the farm now occupied by their son Henry. In 1915 they moved to St. Nazianz, where for a number of years Mr. Brunmeier was janitor at the St. Gregory's church. Due to Mr. Brunmeier's death, he and his wife returned to their homestead farm to reside with their son in November 1939. IGNATZ BURKARD Ignatz Burkard, 71 Ignatz Burkard, well-known St. Nazianz baker, passed away at his home there at 8:15 p.m. last Friday from a sudden heart attack. The deceased was engaged in his regular work until about fifteen minutes prior to the heart attack. Some weeks ago he had a brief illness at which time it was learned that his heart was affected, but his death was sudden and unexpected. Mr. Burkard was born January 20, 1869 in the village of Buehl, Baden, Germany. At the age of 25 years he came to this country and made his home for some time with his brother, Anton, in the town of Eaton. Later he secured a position as cook at a seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he lived for two years. In 1902 he bought the property in St. Nazianz, which since served as his residence and bakery. On November 30, 1912 he was married to Miss Susan Platten of St. Nazianz by the Rev. Epiphanius Deibele at St. Gregory's church. Survivors are his widow and several nieces and nephews. His brother, Anton, preceded him in death December 16, 1939. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning at St. Gregory's Catholic church, with the Rev. Fintan Holzknecht officiating. Christel, 81, of St. Nazianz, a retired farmer and fox and mink rancher, and a former president of the Liberty Telephone Co., died Friday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital in Manitowoc following a lingering illness. Born Nov. 20, 1881, in the Town of Eaton, he was a son of Richard and Mary Stahl Christel, and married the former Minnie Kaltenbrunn on June 2, 1903. She died 10 years ago. Mr. Christel was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in St. Nazianz. Funeral services will be held at St. Gregory’s Church at 10 a.m. Monday, following brief family rites at the Christianson Funeral Home in St. Nazianz at 9:45 a.m. The Rev. CHRISTINA CHRISTEL From the Sheboygan Press Jan. 4, 1938 Mrs. Christel Dies At Home Of Her Son Near St. Nazianz St. Nazianz - Mrs. Christina Christel, 79, passed away Monday noon at the home of her son, Joseph J. Christel, two miles southwest of here. She was born July 5, 1858, in New York City same(sic) to St. Nazianz with her parents when she was still an infant. She has resided in this vicinity since that time. In 1880 she was united in marriage with Wendelin Christel by the Rev. Father Peter A. Mutz, successor to the Rev. Father Oschwald, leader of the religious community established in and around St. Nazianz. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William Ruppel, and five sons, Hugo of Collins, Peter, Joseph J., Max and Rudolph, all of St. Nazianz, 19 granchildren and one great- grandchild. Her husband died about 15 years ago and an infant son and a daughter, 19, also preceded their mother in death. Mrs. Christel was for many years a member of the Christian Mothers' society. Members of that organization will meet at the home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to recite the rosary and will also attend the funeral in a body. The body will be brought to the home of Joseph Christel Tuesday afternoon, where it may be viewed until the time of services Friday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Gregory's church here. The Rev. The deceased, whose maiden name was Rose Gutman, was born Nov. 6, 1886, in the town of Eaton on a farm a mile north of St. Nazianz and has lived there all her life. On June 2, 1908, she married Peter Christel, also of Eaton township. Survivors are the husband, one son at home, and one sister, Mrs. Anton Baumgartner of St. Nazianz. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 9:30 at the Christel home and at 10:00 at St. Gregory's church at St. Nazianz with the Rev. Finton Holzknecht, S.D.S., officiating. RUDOLPH CHRISTEL Rudolph (Rudy) Christel, 82, of St. Nazianz, died Friday night at his home. Born October 28, 1893, in the Town of Eaton, he was a son of the late Wendel and Christen Kaiser Christel. He married Minnie Quante on February 19, 1924 at St. Nazianz. Mr. Christel operated Rudy's Bar in St. Nazianz the past 40 years. WILLIAM CHRISTEL Valders Business Man, Dead at 90 VALDERS—William Christel, 90, pioneer pea canning company executive, civic leader, and bank president, died Friday morning at the home of a daughter. Mrs. Peter Thielen. Mr. Christel had been in failing health since last November, stricken as he observed his 90th birthday. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a. m. Monday at the Bergs Funeral Home, followed by a 10 a. m. requiem high mass at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The Rev. Frederick Dorn will officiate and interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Death of Mr. Christel ends a colorful career of a lifelong county resident, long identified with the industrial, mercantile and banking life of St. Nazianz, Valders and Hilbert. His birthday on Nov. 15 of each year was the occasion of a county wide celebration which his family, six daughters and six sons, planned long in advance. Perfected 13 Inventions He perfected 13 inventions in the field of vegetable canning, including a “texture meter” for testing the maturity of peas that influenced pea canning all over the world. Mr. Christel was born in a log cabin at Steinthal, in the town of Schleswig in 1869(sic) of Austrian immigrant parents. He entered public life early. When just of age he was elected a town supervisor. He became manager of a cheese box factory at St. Nazianz and the same year, 1890, married Miss Wilhelmina Lulloff. In 1895 Mr. Christe1 moved to Valders and built a general store and later added a tavern. He next organized the Pioneer Canning Company which later expanded and became the Valders Canning Company with plants in Valders and Hilbert. He next entered the hardware implement and garage field, building modern facilities for these enterprises in the village. He was the first president of the village and down through the years took an active part in the industrial growth and expansion of this community. 50 Year Member Mr. Christel was a 50 year member of the Wisconsin Canners Association. At his death he headed the William Christel Corporation, controlling the varied enterprises in the village, head of the canning company, president of the Valders State Bank, a director of the Hilbert State Bank and president of the Valders-Collins Oil Company. He was a member of the St. Gregory Catholic parish at St. Nazianz, a 50 year member of the Catholie Knights of Wisconsin, the Valders Lion Club and the Eagles Club. He was an honorary member of the Manitowoc Marine Band, whose members always serenaded Mr. Christel on his birthday. Mrs. Christel died in 1913. HENRY DIEM, SR. Henry Diem, Sr, aged 82, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday at his farm home one-quarter of a mile east of the School Hill, following a stroke which he suffered a few days ago. Deceased was born July 15, 1859 in New York, and at the age of 10 years came with his parents to a farm about one and one-half miles southwest of St. Nazianz, where he lived until 1890. In that year, he married to Mary Ann Durst and the couple established their home in St. Nazianz, where he built a new residence. For 12 years he was employed by William F. Cristel of Valders and worked for the same number of years in a canning factory. In 1914, he brought the small farm where he passed away. Survivors are the widow and two sons, Henry at home, and William of St. Nazianz. Mr. and Mrs. Diem celebrated their golden anniversary in May, two years ago. Funeral services were held this Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the Holy Trinity Catholic church at School Hill, and interment was made in the St. Gregory's parish cemetery. He hated the winter months because of the cold ride. Later the train came through Valders, so he didn't have so far to travel. Christel also owned a canning factory in St. Nazianz, so late Henry was employed there. He also worked as a janitor at St. Gregory Catholic Church. He spoke of making and hauling wood for the church. The wood needed to be hauled into the basement where there were lots of tunnels and turns. ROSA BARBARA DIEM Death called Mrs. Fred. Diem at her home near St. Nazianz on Saturday, May 19, her demise being due to pneumonia. Mrs. Diem, nee Rosa Barbara Mutz, was born in Wuertemberg, Germany, in 1856. She came to this country in 1879, and in 1885 was united in marriage to Fred. Diem. The couple settled on a farm near St. Nazianz where they have since been living. She was a member of the Christian Mothers society. Mrs. Diem is survived by her husband and seven children, namely: Mrs. Rose Buschmann of Denver, Colo., Clara Diem of Chicago, Ill., the Misses Marie and Flora at home, George of Arlington, Calif., and Peter and Joseph at home. Three sisters and one brother also survive her. They are: Miss Anna Mutz of St. Nazianz, Mrs. P. Mueller of the town of Schleswig, Mrs. W. Graf in Germany, and George Mutz of Chelsea, Wis. Mr. Durst suffered the stroke during the evening services and was taken to the home of his daughter where he lingered for forty-eight hours before death relieved him. ANNA (MARX) DYZBALYS Mrs. John Dyzbalys, 56, passed away last Wednesday at the farm home, three miles northeast of School Hill, following a lingering illness. Mrs. Dyzbalys suffered a stroke in August, 1935, and had been confined to her bed since. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock from St. Gregory's Catholic church of St. Nazianz, with interment in the adjoining church cemetery. The deceased, nee Anna Marx, was born in Superior in 1879 and married Mr. Dyzbalys in 1898 at Sheboygan. They located on the homestead farm in Liberty. Following are the survivors: Her husband; three sons, John, Frank and Edward, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Peter Ahl of Meeme, and Mrs. Lena Bennett of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, Jacob Marx of St. Louis, Mo., and two grandchildren. JOHN DYZBALYS John Dyzbalys, aged 71, was found dead in bed at his home near Pigeon Lake, in Liberty township, Manitowoc county, on Thursday morning of last week by members of his family. While not in the best of health for some time, his condition was not alarming, as he had spent Wednesday in the village of St. Nazianz, visiting with relatives. The deceased was born in Lithuania July 29, 1869, and came to this county in 1896, settling in Sheboygan, where he was employed by the Phoenix Chair Company. In 1898 he was married to Miss Anna Marx of St. Nazianz, and the couple then took over the Marx homestead farm, where he passed away. His wife preceded him in death in March, 1936, and a son Joseph, died in April, 1930. Survivors are three sons, John, Jr., Frank and Edward, all at home, one sister; four brothers, and three grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Gregory's church, St. Nazianz, with the Rev. Fintan Holzknecht officiating.
