JOHN ADELMANN ST. NAZIANZ FARMNER KILLED IN RUNAWAY ACCIDENT YESTERDAY John Adelman, Single, Thrown From Buggy When King Bolt Breaks And Is Picked Up Dead By Passerby On Highway Near Home A broken king bolt of a buggy in which he was driving sent John Adelman, a well known St. Nazianz farmer to his death last night, Adelman being thrown over the dash board and striking his head on the hard roadway, and suffering a fracture of the skull that resulted in death. His dead body was found on the highway by D. Steivater, a neighbor, and a young lad named Ellingsted who were driving on the road. The accident happened at 8 o'clock last night and within a quarter of a mile of Adelman's home to which he was enroute when death overtook him. The horse, with the trout wheels of the buggy was found at the stable door when Adelman's body was conveyed to the home by Mr. Steivater and others who had been summoned. Physicians who examined the body found that death was due to an injury to the skull. Adelman was on his way home from a drive to the home of a neighbor and while no one witnessed the accident, the circumstances point clearly to the tragedy having been due to the breaking of the king bolt which threw Adelman to the road where his head came in contact with force with the hard ground. The body was not seriously bruised, the only injury being to the skull. Mr. Adelman was 38 years of age and single. He owned a farm near St. Nazianz and was one of the successful agriculturists of the county. Seven brothers and sisters, residing in St. Nazianz, and two brothers living south of this city, Joseph and Gerald, survive him. No inquest was held, being obviously unnecessary. Funeral arrangements have not been made. Mr. Adelman was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the order will probably have a prayer at the burial. THOMAS AUGUSTINE HEAD INJURIES PROVE FATAL TO TOM AUGUSTINE Companion Has Minor Injuries; Car Demolished MANITOWOC—A Manitowoc hunter was killed but his companion suffered only minor injuries when the automobile in which they were riding ran off the highway and careened down a 40 to 50 foot embankment Friday afternoon. Dead was Thomas F. Augustine, 25, of 4018 Delta St., the driver, who sustained severe head injuries when the car apparently rolled over him. His companion, Harvey Krause, 34, of 1020 S. 23rd St., escaped with multiple cuts and bruises and did not require hospitalization. High Speed The scene about 5 p.m. was a mile south of Brown Corners on Highway 42 near Kasbaum Lake. County traffic police said Augustine's car was coming out of a curve at a high rate of speed when it veered off the right side, smashed through a guard rail fence and rolled down the embankment. The 1957 model Ford two door sedan was a pile of junk by the time it came to rest in an upright position at the bottom of the embankment in a marshy area. The accident occurred, police said, as Augustine was braking sharply because of heavy traffic ahead. Krause estimated the car was going 75 miles an hour when it hit the guard rail. Krause apparently was thrown out near the top of the embankment. He was taken to a doctor's office at Manitowoc for treatment following the accident. Augustine also was tossed from the car but in such a manner that it rolled over his head. He was found about 60 feet northeast of the wreckage. Shotguns Found The men were on their way to Manitowoc at the time. Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, said they had been hunting near Northeim and Pigeon Lake and had consumed beer at two taverns in those areas. Two shotguns were found by police near the wreckage. Doctor Teitgen indicated there would be no inquest. Officer Etherel McNulty of the Wisconsin State Patrol assisted County Traffic Officers John Nelson and LeRoy Beilke in the investigation of the accident. Augustine's death raised the Wisconsin highway toll for the year to 776, again equaling the total on this day a year ago. He was the ninth person to die on Manitowoc County roads so far in 1961. Thomas was born April 22, 1938, in Manitowoc County, son of (Continued on Page M-9) Frank and Irene Gallagher Augustine. He married the former Shirley Neumeyer Sept. 21, 1957, at St. Nazianz. The couple moved to Manitowoc where they have since resided. Served In Army He was employed at Manitowoc Portland Cement Co., Manitowoc, was a member of the Cement Lime and Gypsum Workers Local 34 and a veteran serving in the armed forces from 1954 to 1957 as a specialist third-class in the Army Corps of Engineers. Two years of his tour of duty were spent in Germany. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) Funeral services will be at 8:45 a.m. Monday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic church , St. Nazianz. The Rev. Justin Schleis, O.F.M. Louis Barth has died in a sanitarium in Dearborn, Michigan, where he has been ill for several weeks. Father Barth came here at age 19 with his mother and sisters from their former home of Louisville, Kentucky. Shortly after, he began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest on 27 June 1880 and spent about 20 years as Rector of St. Laurentius in Milwaukee… His body was shipped from Michigan to the St. Laurentius church in Milwaukee and yesterday was brought here to St. Nazianz. The large funeral procession was held today, Tuesday, with the Archbishop and 24 priests participating. The deceased reached the age of 54 and is survived by his sorrowing mother and 2 sisters –Mrs. J.C. Kustermann from here, and Mrs. Dr. L. Jermain of Milwaukee. Der Nord Westen, 02 May 1907 ********* ARCHBISHOP AT FUNERAL Body of Father Barth Brought to St. Nazianz For Burial Archbishop S.G. Messmer, of Milwaukee, will attend the burial services at St. Nazianz Tuesday for Rev. Father Barth, a former resident of the village whose death occurred at Dearborn, Mich, last week. The body was taken to Milwaukee and lay in state until noon Sunday when brief services were held. The funeral party left Milwaukee early this morning and the burial will be held at St. Nazianz Tuesday. Father Barth had visited at the village only a week ago. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, April 29, 1907 P.2 ******** Notes From St. Nazianz. The Rev. Louis Barth of the Roman Catholic arch-diocese of Milwaukee died Thursday, April 25, at Deerborn (sic), Mich., where he had gone in search of health. The remains were brought to Milwaukee Friday where they lay in state in St. Laurentius church, whose head he had been for about twelve years. Father Barth was born in Louisville, Kentucky, Sept. 10, 1853. He received his early education in the parochial and preparatory schools of that place, later continuing his studies for the priesthood at St. Francis seminary, Milwaukee. He was ordained by Archbishop Heiss at St. Francis, June 27, 1880. Twelve years ago he was placed in charge of St. Laurentius church, Milwaukee. Two years ago the church was destroyed by fire, and Father Barth bent his energies on having it replaced by one that would conform more to present day needs than that which had been destroyed. He worked indefatigably, and after its reconstruction, became ill. His physicians advised a much needed rest. Thence he went to Deerborn, Michigan, where he, after a protracted illness, succumbed to overstrain. His remains, accompanied by Archbishop Messmer, several of the clergy and members of the various societies of the church, arrived in St. Nazianz Monday. The funeral took place Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock from the Brothers Chapel. Archbishop Messmer, assisted by several priests, conducted the requiem mass. Interment took place in the adjoining cemetery. Father Barth’s surviving relatives are an aged mother, two sisters, Mrs. J. C. Kusterman, and Mrs. L. T. Germain. JOSEPH A. BARTL ST. NAZIANZ FARMER TERRIBLY HURT, BLASTING Premature explosion of a charge of dynamite with which he was blasting stumps on a piece of land he was clearing will disfigure Joseph Bartel, a St. Nazianz farmer for life, if he survives his injuries. Bartel had an eye gouged out, part of his nose and cheek shot away and muscles of the face terribly lacerated while one arm was broken and the other severely bruised. Bartel was engaged in clearing away stumps from a piece of land he recently purchased and had fixed a charge under one of the stumps. He lit the fuse but did not notice that the fuse had fired. Bartel started to investigate and the explosion followed. He was alone when it happened. The man was terribly hurt and swooned away but later regained consciousness for he was discovered by a part of hunters who heard his groans. The hunting party consisting of Messrs. Martin and William Rappel and Rudolph and Hugo Christel and came upon him when they heard his outcries just after the explosion. At first the party was timid about approaching Bartel for he was standing up against the stump with his jacket wrapped about his head and gave evidence of being demented. When his plight was discovered, however, the hunters gave him first aid and assisted him to his home where a physician was called and he was removed to a hospital in Sheboygan. He was able by the time to give a coherent account of the accident and exhibited considerable nerve when he directed to members of his family things to be done about the farm before he was taken away. Bartel is married, aged 50 and has a large family and had only recently purchased the farm a part of which he was engaged in clearing. He said the fuse at the time of the blasting in did not look as though it had been lighted. There was no smoke and he was about to light another match when the blast occurred. Dr. Minahan was called from St. Nazianz and dressed the injuries after which Bartel was taken to Sheboygan by William Rappel. He will lose one eye and skin grafting may have to be employed to save the cuticle on his face. Part of his nose and cheek are also shot away. Part of his nose and cheek are also shot away." -from Manitowoc Herald News, Oct. 25, 1919 -died from "old age and heart" - "died at his daughter's in Milwaukee") -buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 4, Row 1, Lot 23] [marriage record Manitowoc 7-224] [death record in Milwaukee County]
