
HERBERT NEUMEYER A funeral Mass was held for Herbert Neumeyer, 83, of St. Nazianz, who died Friday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. The Mass was held at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The Reverend Lester Groeschl, pastor, was celebrant of the Mass. Burial was in the parish cemetery. He was born October 29, 1897, in the Town of Manitowoc Rapids, a son of Joseph and Magedelina Fundenberger Neumeyer. He attended Quarry School. On May 5, 1925, he married Lydia Burkart of St. Nazianz. The couple farmed in the Town of Liberty until 1946, when he acquired the Nu-Stone Company which he operated until retiring in 1963. ELIZABETH NIEDERPRUM Neiderprum.(sic) Mrs. Elizabeth Niederprum, 89, of 6364 N. 90th St., Milwaukee, died Saturday afternoon at Milwaukee County Hospital following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Berge Funeral Home, Valders, and at 10 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, the Rev. Denis Cooney, S.D.S., officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Niederprum was born Feb. 18, 1869, at Newton, daughter of the late Simon and Maria Ball Hartlaub. On Nov. 24, 1896, she was married to Matthias Niederprum at Alverno. The couple resided at St. Nazianz until the death of Mr. Niederprum in 1934. Mrs. Niederprum moved to Milwaukee where she made her home until the time of her death. While living at St. Nazianz she was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers Altar Society. Survivors include a foster-son, Hugo Goetz of Minneapolis; two foster-daughters, Mrs. Albert Gnadt of Milwaukee and Mrs. John Gnadt of St. Nazianz; five grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. MATHIAS NIEDERPRUM M. Niederprum Is Called To Rest At Home Friday St. Nazianz - Maththias Niederprum, aged 73, died at his home, one-half mile east of here, at Valders, route 2, Friday at 9 p.m. Mr. Niederprum was born near St. Nazianz Dec. 11, 1860, the son of Henry and Mary Niederprum and lived here all his life. He was the last surviving member of the family. Three brothers and two sisters died in childhood and two sisters, Miss Theresa Niederprum and Mrs. Fred Baer, preceded him in death a few years ago. On Nov. 24, 1896, Mr. Niederprum was married to Miss Elizabeth Hartlaub at St. Joseph's church at Alverno, near Manitowoc. Survivors are: his wife, three children and thriteen grandchildren. Mr. Niederprum was a member of the Holy Name society of St. Gregory's church at St. Nazianz. The members will conduct a vigil Sunday evening at 7:30 o'clock at the Niederprum home and attend the funeral in a body. JOSEPH NOWOVATZKY SR. Passes Away at Monastery Joseph Noworatzky(sic), age 87, passed away early Sunday morning at the Salvatorian Monastery at St. Nazianz. Death was due to infirmities of old age. He was a pioneer of this vicinity. The deceased was born at Hochofen, Bohemia on September 2, 1854, and at the age of 4 years came to St. Nazianz with his mother, where they joined his father, who had preceded them to this country two years before. On January 20, 1885, he was married and established his home on a farm in this vicinity, now the Herbert Neumeyer farm. Six children were born of this union. Survivors are: Ven. Sr. M. Josephine, Sor. D. S. of St. Joseph's hospital, West Bend; Joseph Jr. at the Salvatorian Monestery, Anton at School Hill,and Mrs. Peter (Rosa) Schwoerer of Columbus; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Two daughters, Sr. M. Marion, Sor. D. S., and Sr. M. Anatolia, C. S. A. and his wife preceded him in death. After his wife passed away and all his children were either employed or had entered the convent; Mr. Noworatzky disposed of his farm property and made his home at the St. Nazianz monastery for the last 34 years. MARY O'NEIL Mrs. William O'Neil, 67, of Quarry, Rt. 2, Reedsville, died Friday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, after a one month illness. Funeral services will be at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at Reedsville Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, the Rev. Dennis Cooney officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. O'Neil was born Mary Gill, May 26, 1893, at Egan, S.D., daughter of the late Michael and Anna Colwell Gill. The family moved to Clarks Mills shortly after she was born. She attended parochial school at Clarks Mills and later was graduated from Manitowoc Business College. For two years she was postmistress at Quarry. She was married to William O'Neil Oct. 3, 1922, at St. Mary Cathollic Church, Clarks Mills, and they settled at Quarry. Mrs. O'Neil was a member of the Christian Mothers Society of St. Gregory Church and also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 477, St. Nazianz. Survivors include her husband, two sons, two daughters, two brothers, Leo and Leslie of Quarry, and five grandchildren. JOHN PLATTEN John Platten of St. Nazianz (photo), who late last month observed his 90th birthday, died last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Schnettler, in the village, with whom he resided. He had been seriously ill two weeks. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. from the St. Gregory's Catholic church in St. Nazianz. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Platten was born in Pine Grove, Brown county, in 1854 and accompanied his parents to a farm in this county when nine years old. In 1889 he married Miss Mary Schnettler and they located on a farm east of St. Nazianz, adjoining the Platten homestead. He also operated a lime kiln near the village. In 1930 Mr. Platten retired from farming and moved into St. Nazianz. His wife died 19 years ago. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. John Schnettler, St. Nazianz; son, Peter, on the homestead farm; two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Kellenbenz and Mrs. Susan Burkard, both of St. Nazianz; two brothers, Peter, St. Naziana, and Adam, Loyal, Wis.; and nine grandchildren. Mr. Platten was a charter member of the Holy Name society in St. Nazianz. The members will meet at the Kellenbenz funeral home in the village to recite the rosary Sunday evening. JOSEPHINE PLATTEN Mrs. Josephine Platten, 84, St. Nazianz widow of Peter, died at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, last week Wednesday after a lingering illness. The former Josephine Burkard, she was born February 16, 1889 in the Town of Eaton, Manitowoc County, daughter of the late Anton and Elizabeth Heinzen Burkard. On May 20, 1913, she married Mr. Platten at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. After marriage the couple farmed in the Town of Liberty, until moving to St. Nazianz about ten years ago. She was a lifelong member of St. Gregory Parish, its Christian Mothers Society and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Platten was a member of Wagner-Eberle-Sukowaty American Legion Post 477 at St. Nazianz and prior to that was a member of Thompson-Burkard American Legion Post at Valders. The Thompson-Burkard Post was named for her brother, the late Matthew Burkard, who was a United States Army veteran of World War I. Survivors are two sons, Anselm of St. Nazianz and William of rural Valders; three daughters, Mrs. Elmer Ehrens of Sheboygan, Mrs. George Unterlander of Evanston, Illinois, and Mrs. Roman Bowser of Austin, Texas; 14 grand- children and a great-grandchild; a brother, Peter Burkard of Manitowoc, and two sisters, Miss Clara Burkard and Mrs. Rose Koeppen, both of Sheboygan. MARY PLATTEN Dec. 8, 1924 "Death Comes as She Kneels at Prayers. Mrs. John Platten, St. Nazianz, Stricken at Church." Death came to Mrs. John Platten well known resident of St. Nazianz, as she was at prayer Monday morning. Stricken at the services Mrs. Platten was removed to her home in unconscious state and never regained consciousness passing away at 9:30 Monday evening. Her death is a great shock to the community. Funeral services will be held at St. Gregory's church at which she was an attendant, Thursday morning. Mrs. Platten had attended first mass at the church and as she kneeled was seen to suffer and when other worshippers went to her assistance it was thought she had fainted. Efforts to revive her failed and a physician found that she had suffered a stroke which proved fatal a few hours later. "Came to the State in 1866." Born at Detroit, Mich., August 16, 1864, Mrs. Platten, nee Mary Schuettler, came to Wisconsin with her parents when but two years old in 1866 and had since resided here. She had made her home in St. Nazianz for twelve years, previous to that time residing on a farm. She is survived by her husband and two children, Peter Platten on the old homestead a mile north of St. Nazianz and Miss Hildegard Platten. Four brothers John Schuettler of Washington, Nicholas and Joseph, of St. Nazianz and Frank of St. Cloud, Minn., and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Hildebrand, St. Nazianz, Mrs. Katherine Biskobink, of Plymouth and Mrs. Theresa Kutz, Milwaukee and three grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Platten was a member of the Christian Mothers' society of St. Nazianz and was well and favorably known and her death is keenly felt. PETER PLATTEN Peter Platten, 75, of St. Nazianz, died Friday night at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Thursday night and was then admitted to the hospital. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Christianson Funeral Home, St. Nazianz and at 10:15 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, the Rev. Denis Cooney officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Platten was born July 28, 1888, at St. Nazianz, son of the late John and Mary Schnettler Platten. He married Josephine Burkard, May 20, 1913 at St. Nazianz. The couple celebrated its golden wedding anniversary this year. Mr. Platten was a farmer at St. Nazianz all his life and a member of the Manitowoc County Farm Bureau. He was also a member of Catholic Order of Foresters and a past president of the Holy Name Society of St. Gregory Catholic Church. ANNA PROELL After a lingering illness Miss Anna Proell died Friday at the home of her brother, northwest of this village. She was 70 years of age and resided there until last fall when she removed to make her home with her brother Frank who with two sisters survive her. The funeral was held Monday. Just one week before his death he visited his father in Eaton. He seemed to do very well until Friday night when he grew worse so rapidly that his life was despaired of. He was unconscious on Saturday and died at the hour above stated. Mr. Proell was born in Upper Austria in the year 1844 and was 35 years old at the time of his death. He emigrated to this country in 1858. He lived for a long time in Eaton, this county, taught school there and held the position of town clerk and Justice of the Peace. He was elected to the office of Register of Deeds in the fall of 1876, and re-elected last fall. JOSEPH W. RAUCH Joseph Rauch, Life Long Town Of Eaton Resident, Summoned St. Nazianz.-(Special)- Joseph W. Rauch, 82, life-long resident of the town of Eaton, passed away at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Andrew Groh, after a lingering illness. He was born in the town of Eaton October 23, 1856, the son of the late Mathias Rauch and Rosa Benzinger. He was married to Miss Victoria Sprang on May 22, 1883, and the couple made their home on the farm where Mrs. Rauch died about 20 years ago. At about that time Mr. Rauch was forced to retire from active service due to a heart ailment and continued to live on the old homestead with his daughter and family. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. William Lulloff of Mt. Calvary and Mrs. Andrew Groh in the town of Eaton; seven sons, Max of near St. Nazianz, the Rev. Father Joseph Rauch, pastor of the Catholic parish at Francis Creek, Fred of Wauwatosa, Dr. William A. Rauch of Manitowoc, Peter of Milwaukee, Dr. Alphonse Rauch of Kenosha and H. Herman Rauch, regional director of the Wisconsin labor relations board at Milwaukee. Twenty-six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Rauch was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, the Holy Name society and the Third Order of St. Francis. Funeral services will be held at St. Gregory's church in St. Nazianz Saturday at 10 a.m. Celebrant of the solemn requiem mass will be the Rev. Joseph Rauch, a son of the deceased. He will be assisted by the Rev. Fintan Holzknecht, S.D.S. of St. Nazianz and the Rev. Robert Schweizer of Milwaukee. Six sons of the deceased will act as pallbearers. VICTORIA RAUCH On last Wednesday evening the Angel of Death entered the happy home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rauch and took from them their loving mother and sister Mrs. Rauch. On Tuesday Mrs. Rauch was taken to Milwaukee to submit to an operation but failed to recover, passing away on Wednesday. Mrs. Rauch was a loving mother and a fond sister. Her loving dispos- ition won a host of friends who will mourn her untimely demise. She is survived by nine children some of whom were present when Death approached. JOHN RIESTERER (d. 1946) John Riesterer, 75, died Saturday night at the farm home in Eaton, west of the village of St. Nazianz. He was born on the homestead farm in 1871 and in 1894 married Miss Rose Anholt of near Kiel. He was a member of St. Gregory's parish in St. Nazianz and a charter member of the Catholic order of Foresters and the first chief ranger, which office he held several years. He was also a member of the Holy Name society. Mr. Riesterer served 45 years as a member of the schoolboard of Joint District No.8 of Eaton. Mrs. Riesterer died in 1938. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Clemens Endries of route 1, Kiel, Mrs. John Schnell and Mrs. Joseph Schnell of St. Nazianz; nine sons, Frank and John Jr., of route 4, Chilton, Peter and Reuben of St. Nazianz, Anton, William, Joseph and Herman of route 1, Kiel, Stephen of route 1, Mishicot; sister, Mrs. Dorothy Mailman of Sheboygan; brother Simon of Janesville. LESTER J. RIESTERER Lester J. Riesterer, age 86, a former St. Nazianz resident, currently of Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc, died on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at Shady Lane. He was born on Nov. 26, 1921, in the town of Eaton, Manitowoc County, son of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Hanke) Riesterer. Lester served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed with Hamachek of Manitowoc for many years, and then was employed with Millers of St. Nazianz, retiring in 1983. Lester was a member of the Lions Club in St. Nazianz and was an active volunteer for the Salvadoran Mission for many years and also the American Legion. He is survived by many family members and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Michael Bigley, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Gregory's Catholic church in St. Nazianz. The Rev. Denis Cooney will celebrate the requiem mass. She was born Jan. 27, 1906, at Tony, Wis., the daughter of the late John and Anna Hopman Strop, and was married at Ladysmith Oct. 20, 1925, to Robert Reuben Riesterer. Her husband died in February, 1961. She was married to Anton Riesterer July 12, 1921, at St. Nazianz, celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in 1971. They farmed at rural Kiel until their retirement in 1964. She was a member of St. Gregory Christian Mothers Sodality. Survivors include her husband; five sons, four daughters, three brothers, Frank, of Kewaunee, Carl of rural Kiel and Peter, of Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. Alex (Frances) Woelfel Sr., of rural Kiel; 47 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was born Oct. 29, 1897, in the Town of Eaton (Manitowoc County), a son of the late John and Rosa Anhalt Riesterer. He attended St. Gregory Catholic School, St. Nazianz. On Nov. 18, 1919, he married Elizabeth Hanke at Charlestown. The couple farmed in the Town of Eaton and he employed in construction. Mrs. Riesterer preceded him in death. He was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. Survivors include two sons both of St. Nazianz; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five brothers; and a sister. He was preceded in death by a daughter, two great-grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters. THERESA ANN RIESTERER Theresa Ann Riesterer, age 53, a resident of Manitowoc Health Care Center, died early Tuesday morning, March 15, 2005, at the center. Theresa was born July 22, 1951 in Manitowoc, daugther of the late Joseph and Helen (Gries) Riesterer. She was a member of the Special Olympics and loved music, dancing and animals. Theresa also enjoyed spending time with her many friends and family. (Survivors omitted for privacy) She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Riesterer. MARIA A. RISTOW Maria A. Ristow, 38, of Kiel, died unexpectedly, Sunday morning, Oct. 20, 1996 at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center, Neenah, from complications of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Oct. 11, 1996. She is the former Maria Agreda born Oct. 14, 1958 in Caracas, Venezuela, daughter of Jose Agreda and Ana Casado. She graduated from high school in Caracas, Venezuela. Maria was a graduate of St. Thomas University, St. Paul, Minn., where she received her B.S. degree in biology and her master's degree in education. She recently received her B.S. degree in chemistry from Lakeland College. On June 6, 1986, she married Dale Ristow at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. She was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz; a member of the Board of Education at St. Gregory Catholic School, a member of the Home and School Association and coached the Odyssey of the Minds Program at St. Gregory's. He was united in marriage to Mary Himmelsbach of St. Nazianz on July 28, 1891, and the couple resided near St. Nazianz for 21 years, after which they moved to their present home. Survivors are his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Arno Schneider of near School Hill, and two sons, George of Cedar Grove, and John at home; also three sisters and eight grandchildren. Roitt Laid To Rest Mrs. Marie(sic) Roitt, aged 83, widow of the late Joseph Roitt, passed away at her farm home in the town of Schleswig on Thursday evening at 7 o'clock, very unexpectedly. The deceased, nee Marie Himmelsbach, was born April 1, 1857 in Germany. In 1875 she came to this country and settled in Wisconsin. She was married to Joseph Roitt in 1889, and the couple moved onto a farm in the town of Schleswig, where they resided for many years and then purchased their present farm home 2-1/2 miles northeast of Kiel. Her husband preceded her in death on August 2, 1937. Survivors are 2 sons and one daughter, namely: John on the homestead farm; George of Cedar Grove, and Mrs. Arno (Helen) Schneider of the town of Meeme, and ten grandchildren.
