ANNA (STAHL) KALTENBRUN (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) From the Manitowoc Herald Times, Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Saturday, January 16, 1960 - Page 7, Column 2. She came to the United States with her family in 1890. She was married to Anton Kaltenbrun May 19, 1908 at St. Nazianz. Her husband preceded her in death in 1920 at which time Mrs. Kaltenbrun assumed managership of the Kaltenbrun Mfg. Co. which she managed until the time of her death. She was a member of St. Gregory Church and the church Christian Mothers Altar Society. Survivors include a son, at home; two daughters, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Geigel, Mrs. Frank Schwab, and Mrs. Sylvia Mertens; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. ANTON KALTENBRUN/KALTENBRUNN (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin. Issue - Thursday, April 29, 1920 - Page 4, Column 1. On Saturday death entered the Kaltenbrunn home and took from them their beloved husband and father, Anton Kaltenbrunn, better known as "Foundry Tony." The deceased was born here Feb. 24, 1872, and reached an age of 48 years and two months. He was married 12 years ago to Anna Schweitzer, who with four children survive him. They are: Adelinda, 11, Rosalia, 8, Monica, 4, and Ambros, 1 year old. Besides he leaves his 84 year old mother, two brothers and two sisters, viz: Ambrose, Ludwig and Mrs. Anton Schwoerer here, and Mrs. Mutzbauer of Milwaukee. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Gregory's church. Postnote: The obituary lists his wife's maiden name as Schweitzer however my research of vital records indicate her maiden name was Stahl. I believe this to be a misprint. ****************** The following from a different researcher: DAUGHTER LOOKS ON, HELPLESS, AS MAN HANGS SELF St. Nazianz Inventor Just Freed From Insane Asylum Anton Kaultenbrun, of St. Nazianz, known as a genius, and inventor of a feed cutter on which he held valuable patents, commited suicide by hanging in a shed at his home Saturday afternoon while his little 10 year old daughter, a witness to the tragedy, was unable to summon help in time to prevent the act of the crazed man. When neighbors reached the scene in response to the cries of the horrified child, they found that Kaultenbrun had accomplished his mad pursuit and was beyond help. Kaultenbrun who was 47 years of age, had long been considered an eccentric character and twice been committed to the northern hospital at Oshkosh from which he was paroled only April 1, this year, and had returned to his home. Saturday he was about as usual and during the afternoon while in the shed where he was working on his invention, secured a rope and fastened it about a rafter and swung off. His little daughter passing the shed, saw her father suspended by the rope and cried for help but when assistance reached the man, he was found to be dead. AN INVENTIVE GENIUS Some years ago, Kaultenbrun, who was a farmer, and a genius of inventive turn, had perfected improvements to a feed cutter which the government recognized by granting him patents. Later the man worked upon a blower he was perfecting at the time his mind gave way in March 1919, when he was committed to the Oshkosh institution. He was later released but was again committed and remained there until this month. Nazianz—Anton Kaltenbrunn committed on Saturday suicide in which he hung himself in the shed by his residence. His ten-year old daughter saw the deed and ran for help, this came too late though. Kaltenbrunn suffered from mental instability and was first for a week taken home from the institution by his spouse on parole. He appeared to be quite normal. He was the inventor of a feed cutter and owned other patents as well. He was 47 years old and left behind a wife with 4 children. The burial took place on Tuesday morning at half an hour ‘til ten.” —interpretation by Emilie B. Lindemann (sent in by researcher/see contributors page)

EVA (GEIGEL) KALTENBRUN (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin. Issue - Thursday, July 28, 1927 - Page 4, Column 1. Mrs. Eva Kaltenbrunn, nee Geigel, widow of the late Victor Kaltenbrunn, died Thursday noon at the age of 89 years, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. Schwoerer. She was born in Baden, Germany, and at the age of 21 years, came with her sister to America. In 1870 she was united in marriage to Mr. Kaltenbrunn, a widower with five children. They resided on a farm one mile north of St. Nazianz, where the deceased lived with her son, Ambrose, until about three weeks ago, when she became ill. Her daughter, Mrs. Anton Schwoerer then took her to her home, where she died peacefully. Her death was rather sudden, as when the daughter brought the tray with her noon day meal to her, she found her mother dead. The survivors are the son, Ambrose, two daughters, Mrs. A. Schwoerer and Mrs. Mutzbauer of Milwaukee, and the wife and children of her late son, Anton Kaltenbrunn. Funeral services were held on Monday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Gregory's church, officiated by Rev. F. Holzknecht. Burial will be in the adjacent cemetery. Correction Postnote: My research of the church and civil records indicate that they were married in 1869, not 1870 as mentioned in this obituary. Mrs. Mutzbauer was Eva's step-daughter. A step-son, Ludwig Kaltenbrunn preceded her in death in 1924. ************ Eva nee Geigel 2nd wife of Victor [married July 20, 1869 at St. Gregory] -daughter of Jacob Geigel and Anna Ryba -born Baden -emigrated to US with her sister in 1858 -died from "old age and cordior failure"

KATHERINE KALTENBRUN (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin. Issue Thursday, December 24, 1942 - Page 1, Column 4 Mrs. Katherine Kaltenbrunn, aged 90, oldest member of the St. Gregory parish of St. Nazianz, passed away at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Christel, a mile east of St. Nazianz on Sunday morning at 2 o'clock. She had been ill for some time. Mrs. Kaltenbrunn, nee Katherine Riesterer, was born April 18, 1852, in Baden, Germany, and in 1871 came to America, direct to St. Nazianz. In September, 1874, she was married to Louis Kaltenbrunn at St. Nazianz, by the late Rev. P.A. Mutz. After their marriage they bought the farm now occupied by Louis Adelman, where they lived until 1912 when they retired, making their home in the village of St. Nazianz. Fourteen children were born to the couple, four of whom died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Anton Schleh died May 31, 1925. Her husband also preceded her in death in January, 1924. Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Albert Christel of Valders R.1, Mrs. John Michels and Mrs. Joseph Gaerthoeffner of Sheboygan, Mrs. William Wollersheim of Kiel R. 2, and Mrs. Anton Eberle of Valders R. 1; four sons, Anton of Random Lake, Joseph and Louis of West Allis and Peter of Oakwood; 50 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild. Funeral services were held this Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Gregory's church and burial was made in the adjoining church cemetery. The Rev. Fintan Holzknecht officiated. Postnote: This is the obituary of my great-grandmother. I have researched the church records and she was married to her husband in August of 1875, not September of 1874 as the obituary states. Her husband was also known as Ludwig. *********** (Katharina nee Riesterer April 4, 1852-Dec. 20, 1942 wife of Ludwig [married Aug. 24, 1875 at St. Gregory] -daughter of Peter Riesterer born Baden -emigrated directly to St. Nazianz in 1871 -died from "acute coronary occlusion and arteriosclerosis")

LUDWIG KALTENBRUN (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin Vol. 31, No. 48. Issue - Thursday, January 31, 1924 - Page 4, Column 1 Ludwig Kaltenbrunn died at his home here on Friday night after an illness of four days with pneumonia. Deceased was born in Germany in 1851 and came to this country at the age of four years. In 1862 he came to St. Nazianz, settling on a farm four miles west of the village. He was married to Catherine Hausherr in 1875. Ten years ago the couple moved to this village where they have since resided. Mr. Kaltenbrunn's death was a shock and is a loss to the community, as he was a man of good character and was liked by all who knew him. He is also a great loss to the congregation as he was the president of the St. Nazianz Branch 109 of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and was secretary of St. Gregory's congregation. It was only last week when he closed the books for 1923 and had everything in order. On last Tuesday he took sick with pneumonia. The end came unexpectedly on Friday evening. For many years he was janitor of the church. The funeral was held on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Deibele officiating. Burial was made in St. Gregory's cemetery. Besides his wife the following survive him: daughters, Mrs. Anton Schleh, Mrs. Albert Christel, Mrs. Jos. Gaerthoefner and Mrs. Anton Eberle of St. Nazianz; sons, Anton of Liberty, Joseph and Louis of West Allis and Peter of Racine; brother, Ambrose; and sisters Mrs. Helen Mutzbauer of Milwaukee and Mrs. Anton Schwoerer. All the children were here for the last sad rites. The out-of-town people not including the children who attended the funeral were: Misses Hattie and Louise Mutzbauer, and Joseph Mutzbauer of Milwaukee, Mr. and Mrs. J. Geigel, Reedsville; Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Schleh, Mr. and Mrs. John Schleh, J. Lutz and the Misses Catherine, Marie and Adeline Lutz of Sheboygan, and A. Connell of Chilton. The funeral was one of the largest held here for some time. Fourteen School Hill Catholic Knights and about 75 of the St. Nazianz branch and 20 members of the Holy Name society attended in a body. Also the Christian Mothers, besides other friends. The six sons of John Riesterer were pallbearers, being relatives of the deceased. Correction Postnote: This is the obituary of my great-grandfather. Ludwig's wife, Catherine is listed with a maiden name of Hausherr in this article. All research on vital records I have conducted to date list her maiden name as Riesterer - I believe this to be a misprint in the obituary. Also, his date of arrival in St. Nazianz is listed as 1862. My research shows that they arrived in America in July 1855 and I have a copy of Ludwig's sister Helen's birth in St. Nazianz in August of 1855. One daughter, Helen Mahnke (later Helen Michels) is omitted from the list of daughters surviving him. ************ Kaltenbrun, Ludwig (also Louis) (Oct. 25, 1851-Jan. 25, 1924 husband of Katharina Riesterer [married Aug. 24, 1875 at St. Gregory in Ludwig’s obit, his wife is shown as “Catherine Hausherr”] son of Victor Kaltenbrun and Katharine Stoll –born Baden –arrived in New York on the ship Zurich from Havre, France on July 23, 1855, arriving with his parents and 2 siblings –farmer –in 1916 Ludwig and Katharina retired from the farm and moved to St. Nazianz –on Feb. 12, 1916 purchased the house at 119 South Third Avenue –Ludwig lived in this house until his death in 1924 –Katherine lived here until selling in 1936 –died from “myocarditis, hypostatic pneumonia and arteriosclerosis”)
