AMBROSE EBERLE In Loving Memory of Village Head of St. Nazianz Dies at Home Ambrose Eberle Was Supervisor Past 22 Years St. Nazianz- Ambrose Eberle, 64, civic leader and first president of the village of St. Nazianz, collapsed in his garden at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and died before aid reached him. He had been working in the garden when Miss Luanne Madson, neighboring high school student, saw him fall. She immediately went for help but Eberle was dead by the time men from the neighborhood picked him up and carried him into the house. Although he had suffered a slight heart attack some time ago he apparently was in good health to the time of the seizure. A member of the Manitowoc County Board for the past 22 1/2 years, he had been chairman of the Town of Eaton for 21 years prior to the incorp- oration of the village of St. Nazianz. He was chairman of the Lions committee that investigated and sponsored the incorporation of the village and for his untiring efforts was not only elected first president of the village but was reelected this year. He was also the president- elect of the Lions Club and was to have been installed in office this week. He had also served as the town clerk for 5 years, was chairman of the Manitowoc County Highway Committee for 15 years, was chief ranger for the St. Nazianz chapter of the Catholic Order of Foresters for many years and was assistant cashier of the St. Nazianz State Bank. Headed for Company Mr. Eberle was the organizer and for many years served as president of the St. Nazianz Silver Fox Co. during the heyday years of the fur business. He was chairman of the building committee for the present St. Gregory Community Center and was on the committee for the diamond jubilee of the village and again for the centennial. At the recent Home show sponsored by the Lions Club, Eberle, then vice president, fried sausages at the club stand for a straight eight hour period. His death is the second within a month involving a county board member. Charles Wenzel, representing the village of Reedsville died in a Green Bay hospital recently of injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Brillion. Eberle's death means the Board will have 15 new members this year. There were 13 new men elected on the spring ballot and a 14th was named to replace Wenzel. The village board of St. Nazianz will meet Monday night in emergency session to draft a message of condolence and proclaim a business holiday the morning of the Eberle funeral. The board is expected to make an announcement on replacement shortly. Funeral Wednesday Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory Catholic Church when the Rev. Denis Cooney, assisted by two other priests and not yet selected, will sing a solemn requiem high Mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state at the St. Gregory Community Center after 7 p.m. Monday with recitation of the Rosary scheduled by the Catholic Order of Foresters at 8:30 o'clock this Monday evening and at 8 p.m. Tuesday by the Holy Name Society. Mr. Eberle was born Oct. 18, 1892 at St. Nazianz, son of the late Frank and Caroline Sommer Eberle, and lived in St. Nazianz all his life. Endries was trapped in the cab of the truck. He was hauling sand and gravel for cottage owners at the lake. The sand settles to the bottom when the ice melts and makes a better swimming beach. His truck broke through about 50 feet from the south shore of the lake. The truck settled on its tailgate with just the tips of the front fender showing above the ice. Rescue operations were complicated by the large chunks of ice floating in the hole. Edward Dyzbalys, owner of a resort on the lake, used a ladder and grapple hooks, to remove the ice. He was then able to break the windshield with an ice chisel. Merlin Wiesner and two sons of the deceased also helped with the recovery of the body. The first alarm was called in by Mrs. Frieda Green, who lives in a cottage near the scene of the accident. Mrs. Green said that she heard the Endries truck coming with the last load and went out to warn him of a “soft spot” in the ice. But his truck had already plunged beneath the surface before she could give the warning. She fainted. When she recovered she called Dyzbalys. Mrs. Green was highly excited and somewhat incoherent concerning the “soft spot in the ice.” Mrs. Dyzbalys, however explained that while visiting at Green’s earlier in the week she had noticed an open spot and was told that a load of sand and gravel dumped there had melted through the ice and dropped to the bottom. Surface of the ice in the immediate area was of a shell-like quality which broke under the normal weight of the rescue party, but was supported by some 20 inches of ice underneath the shell. Gravel dropping through the ice in any volume would have forced water onto the snow already on the ice forming the surface crust. Tracks of the truck leading to the hole showed it had been breaking through a progressively deeper crust for from six to 10 feet before the final plunge. Two days of freezing weather and a light snowfall had masked the spot making it look like the rest of the lake surface. Endries’ wife told authorities that her husband had stopped at home and she had had a cup of coffee with him about 15 minutes before the accident. According to Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen it was learned that Endries had broken through the ice on Cedar Lake in the town of Schleswig last year while simllarly spreading gravel on the ice, but had jumped clear of the truck at that time. Funeral Monday Funeral services were held Monday at St. Gregory’s Catholic church at St. Nazianz, the Rev. Denis Cooney officiating. Also surviving Mr. Filz is his second wife, the former Theresa Sproll, to whom he was married on Feb. 22, 1930.
