First German Ev. Lutheran Church, Manitowoc, Wis.

"The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man
took, and sowed in his field: Which indeed is the least of all seeds:
but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a
tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof."
[Matthew 13:31-32] As everywhere in the world where the Lord’s kingdom
is built it has been going here in Manitowoc, Wis., according to the
Lord’s word: As the grain of mustard seed were the beginnings of this
church. The noble seed of the divine word was spread based on the hope
that the Lord would put His blessing on it and would let grow a christian
community out of small beginnings.
When Pastor C. F. Goldammer, who had followed a vocation of the Ev. Luth.
Church in Newton, Manitowoc Co., Wis. in spring 1851, started to preach
in the same year here in Manitowoc, too, this town was only a minor place
of a few hundred inhabitants. But among the few families there were
several ones who willingly wanted to listen to the preaching of the
divine word. These gathered every two weeks on Tuesday evening for
service in the district’s old school-house at Washington and 7th Sreet.
Pastor Goldammer didn’t dare to form a church out of these few families
immediately, but considered Manitowoc as an outpost for mission. The
following year, after he had purchased a horse and wasn’t forced to go
the distance on foot any more, he preached in Manitowoc every Sunday
evening.
In spring 1853 the little flock did one step further to the foundation
of a christian church by buying a lot at the northwestern corner of
Marshal and 10th Street. for sake of a future church building. In the
deed [of transfer] Richard Klingholz transfers lot 7 in block 271 for
$110 to Gottfried Melzner and Johann Riederich as "trustees of the
United Lutheran and Evangelical church in the village of Manitowoc,
Wis." Cash money was scanty in those days and the purchase price was
collected partly in and around Manitowoc. In spring 1854 Pastor Goldammer
handed over one of his country parish to another preacher and thus was
able to spend more time

[page 4 ]

and energy for Manitowoc. The number of those who stood by the word of
God had been growing in such scale, too, that it had seriously to be
considered to vocate an own preacher to Manitowoc. Pastor Goldammer
tried to get someone for Manitowoc but with no success. In this
situation he decided to cede his country parish in Newton to another
preacher and move to Manitowoc himself. Summer 1855 a successor to
Pastor Goldammer in Newton was found and he moved here.
Yet as early as February, 7th, 1855 - as can be drawn from old documents-
the church members had adopted a parish code and had organized themselves
under the name of "Ev. Luth. Trinity Church at Manitowoc, Wis." In fact,
this name was changed soon, for the community incorporated on April 9th,
1855 as "German Ev. Luth. Church". But this name still didn‘t please; on
March, 23rd, 1860, once more a change was legally having made by the
legislature of the state. They now adopted our current name "First German
Ev. Luth. Church in Manitowoc, Wis." In that first parish code of
February, 7th, 1855, which, by the way, was signed by 71 heads of family
already, the community professed the "Augsburgian confession and Luther’s
Small Katechism, but a preacher of the church never may apply the rites
of the old-lutheran church when administering service acts." It was held
necessary to insert this clause with respect to some families of the
Reformed Church who liked to join the community. Soon this addendum was
found of undue consideration and abolished.
Article 35 of that code of 1855 which concerns the examination of those
who applied for admission to the federation [i.e. the parish](examination
and admission then was performed by the parish council) reads: "The most
important articles of the church code must be read to the member-to-be,
whereafter same has to conscientiously answer the following questions:
1. Do you believe the Bible to be God’s word?
2. Do you believe man unapt to all good and apt to all evil?
3. Do you believe that man will be justified and beatified solely through
the faith in Jesus Christ, out of free grace by Christ’s merit?

[page 5]

4. Do you confess that a christian must be renewed by act of the Holy
Spirit and his life be sanctified, as no one can see the Lord without
   sanctification?
5. Do you commit yourself to contribute to the best of your ability
whatever is to advantage the parish and the honour of the Kingdom
   of God?

In spring 1855 construction of the first church building was decided.
The lot acquired in 1853 didn’t seem suitable any more and was sold for
$400, the present church lot was bought for $400 but half of the sum was
donated by Mr. Samuel Hinkly in New York. Construction was undertaken at
once and completed by spring 1856 by carpenter Johann Meyer.
In this year the Ev. Luth. Synod of Wisconsin assembled here on
invitation of the parish, and the new church was consecrated to the name
of the Holy Trinity on May, 18th, 1856 in the presence of the Synod. As
the parish in its first code already had decreed for its preacher "that
he should join the Ev. Luth. Synod of Wisconsin" and "that he should
every year, if possible, attend the synod’s assembly" it now did this
for its own. On occasion of the synod’s assembly here in 1856 the parish
joined up for membership and was admitted to the federation of the synod.
A true daughter of the synod‘s has it [i.e. the parish] ever remained!
In later years it has repeatedly invited and housed the synod: 1864,
1871, 1880, 1894, and now 1905. It has regularly had represent it by a
delegate to the assemblies and has taken a vivid share in every work of
the synod. It has collected contributions at church and in houses -
above all it has commissioned its young men to the service of the synod
and the church. Amongst them are the pastors: Wilhelm Schimpf (deceased),
Albert Fröhlke, Wilhelm Schlei, August Kirchner, Christian Sieker,
Wilhelm Kansier, Eduard Bartke, Arthur Schneider, Johann Guse, August
Pätz; and the teachers: Emil Sampe, Eduard Schneider.
The parish in 1856 now had a church, a preacher on its own, services
every sunday, school lessons - but quite a many still was rather scanty.
The school lessons had to be held in the vestibule of the church, and
space there was very tight. Pastor Goldammer had to makeshift by lodging,
even didn’t get a fixed salary from the parish yet. From these

[page 6]

times many a strange resort [from difficulties] is told even nowadays.
In spite of the meager circumstances the parish grew quickly in
membership number and was able as early as spring 1857 to chance the
decision "to build a parsonage and a school-house, too." In the same
year still this construction was accomplished by Gerhard Meyer, so that
the pastor now had his own residence.
On August, 1st, 1858 Pastor Goldammer delivered his parting preach and
followed the vocation of the parish of Burlington, Racine Co., Wis. -
Pastor Ph. Köhler of Renno, Washington Co., Wis. was vocated his
successor and was ordained by Pastor Ph. Sperling on September, 5th. Not
later than February 1859 Pastor Köhler had to call the managing board’s
attention to the fact that the class room was far too small and could not
hold the number of pupils. One would have loved to buy the adjacent half
lot, too, but didn’t dare to in those hard times. The parish was very
pleased to hear in April 1860 that the desired half lot had been donated
to it by Mr. Hinkly and Mr. Allen. Now they immediately set work on
enlarging the annex of the old parsonage to an considerable degree to
gain more space for the school. Money was scarce, therefore most of the
parishioners payed their contribution to the building with material and
work. Karl Hardow provided the carpenter work and got payed $1,00 per
day. This building of 1860 served the parish in various ways until it
was torn down in 1891 to give way to the present school-house.
In 1863 the old church had to be enlarged by adjointing galleries on
both sides to gain space for the churchgoers. In March 1866 the parish
totaled 184 families and 193 children at school. Such a growth, although
they counteracted the [Masonic] lodges in 1859, 1861 and later on
seriously. On February, 21st, 1859, the managing board was told by Pastor
Köhler "that several members of the parish were at the same time members
of the lodge existing at Manitowoc, that such [things] could not get on
with each other and ought in no way be approved according to God’s word
but be suppressed; hence means and measures should be taken to keep the
community immaculate thereof for all future times." So, on September,
9th, 1861, the parish determined that "an article should be added to the
parish code that hereafter nobody should be a member of this parish who
is member of a secret

[page 7]

society". The records bear multiple witness that in the various cases it
was very patiently tried to come to terms, but that after all it was
acted according to this determination. Up to now the same has never been
a dead letter, this point is carefully discussed with each admission, the
applicant, if necessary, is rejected or the pertaining parish member is
excluded.
One hundred and ninety three children at school! No wonder that in 1866
the community has to debate on new building, again; a big two-storied
school-house was erected and served for 25 years until it had to give
way to the present school building in 1891. Many of our present parish
members have lived there the good and bad times of their schooldays.
From the beginnings on this community has with special effort payed
attention to instruction and education of its young people, and always
was willing to accomodate foreign children. The parish code of 1855
already demands the pastor to "take care of the education of the young".
But this does not mean by way of confirmation classes or christian
teachings on sundays only! No, in the report of 1856 we already read:
"The parish had christian teaching for their young on workdays". In 1857
a school-house is built, in 1859 "two school directors to assist the
preacher" are chosen, who are assigned to "inspect the school once every
month." In 1864 several parish assemblies discuss and finally adopt
meticulously elaborated school regulations, as well in 1880. In 1864 the
first teacher is employed, later on classes are split according to
requirements and more teachers are appointed. In 1866 a big school-house
is built, in 1890 our present one, which costs with all equipment about
$15,000 and is inaugurated and put into use in December 1891. It contains
6 big class rooms and one assembly hall which holds 450 persons. Builder
[was] Louis Bartke. It would go much too far to show in detail how
parallel was the growth and advancement of the school to that of the
parish, how school regulations and curricula were improved and expanded
from time to time, how much - in the last years still - teachers and
school directors have strived to effectuate in our school the ideal of
an Ev. Luth. parish school: a school, wherein the word of God and
Luther’s doctrine not only be a subject matter of teaching, but permeate
all subjects and questions

[page 8]

of discipline, a school, in which not only the secular sciences are
cultivated, but which in its achievances may not be afraid of being
compared to other schools.

230 children are instructed in 4 classes, they enter school with six
and are released when been administered confirmation, either when they
have regularly passed the full course of lessons or have reached the
age of 13 years on August, 1st, before confirmation.

During 40 years since the school was established there has been many a
change, but Mr. Grotheer has been the teacher of the 1st class for 22
years, and Mr. Wilh. Krause has passed away on duty here in 1904.

That first church building of 1856 served the parish for many years,
but in 1870 one started to raise funds for a new church. On october
1872 a resolution was made, to build a new church 48 by 96 for about
$10,000. Construction plan and realization were made by Johann Meyer.
On 21st of december 1873 the present church was consecrated to the
service of the Trinity with the participation of the synodal dean, pastor
Johann Bading and C. Goldammer and Ph. Köhler. Subsequent acquisitions
were the present altar in 1894, the organ, two bells and the church clock,
which, however, was replaced by a new one in 1903.
The parsonage, located south of the church, was built by Theo. Schmidtmann
and Hermann Strothoff in 1882.

As official acts over the past 50 years were taken: baptized 4755;
confirmed 2137; married 814; buried 1237.

Luth. Church in Manitowoc, Wis. On February, 14th, 1860 an assembly of the Ev. Luth. Church dicussed the foundation of a mutual association for the relief of sick people, named a committee consisting of Pastor Phil. Köhler, Gerhard Meyer, Friedrich Rietz, Adam Fuchs, Christian Schmalfeldt, and Ludwig Maas, and commissioned this committee to design a constitution. On May, 5th, 1860 already a constitution was presented and adopted, and it was decided that the association should hold its first meeting on May, 21st 1860 and elect its officials. On said May, 21st the first meeting of the association took place, same was opened with chanting and, as the officials had not yet been elected, Pastor Köhler acted as chairman. The effected election of officials produced the following results: For president: Gerhard Meyer For vice-president: Christian Schmalfeldt For secretary: Johann Meyer For treasurer: Ludwig Maas. In this first meeting 19 named members signed the constitution, namely: Christ. Phil. Köhler Johann Meyer Gerhard Meyer Christian Schmalfeldt Carl Hardow Ludwig Maas Johannes Dittmar Hermann Wehausen Joach. Pingel August Mahnke Carl Meyenburg Heinrich Keubke Heinrich Kopp Hermann Schmiedicke Johann Haase Friedrich Mahnke Friedrich Döscher Carl Neumann Christ. Zimmermann Out of these 19 named members, there are only two surviving still belonging to the association, that are: Christian Schmalfeldt and Carl Meyenburg. Out of this tiny onset a strong association has grown counting 121 members today. The association has abided by [page 27] its purpose, namely: support of sick members and maintenance of widows and minor children of deceased members. Commemorate of the word: "Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind [1. Petr 3, 8]" the association acted often in an unselfish manner even in cases when it was not obliged to by provisions of the constitution and proved its christian spirit by dispensing to those members who were hit especially hard. Thus the association has produced relief for many a distress, becalmed many a grief and wiped off many a tear. During its lifetime of 45 years the association has disbursed as benefits for the sick $6,387.55, for obituaries $12,730.00. As the beginnings of the association its advantages were of minor importance, in case of sickness a weekly benefit of $1.75 was payed, in case of a member‘s obituary $8.00, in case of an obituary of a member’s wife only $4.00. Deceased members' widows got a monthly benefit of $2.00. Today the association has to offer significantly better advantages, namely: In case of sickness a weekly benefit of $3.00, in case of a member’s obituary $220.00 are payed to the legal heirs, in case of an obituary of a member’s wife the payment is $50.00. The financial situation of the association is a pleasing one, it holds a capital of $2,177.11 which is loaned to members as first mortgage or dept guarantees. The current officials of the association are: President: Johann Mahnke Vice-president: Carl Engel First secretary: Carl Höfer Second secretary: Wihelm Sampe Treasurer: Wilhelm Gomoll. [page 28] To the 25th jubilee of the music band 1880 - 1905 It was the June, 20th, 1880 when a number of parishioners gathered to found a music band. They then practiced assidiously to play for the first time at church for the 25th jubilee of the parish. In December 1880 the community decided "that the music band shall play in the church on fiest days except Good Friday and at all four weeks of trinity, if possible. Any music which is apt to give offense, as on balls and dances, may not be played." A constitution was drafted and the first officials elected were: President: Christ. Mahnke Secretary: Teacher Louis Ungrodt Mr. J. Eberle was elected for conductor. The first instruments costed the club $265.00. Part of this sum was covered by the parish, the rest was payed by the members of the music band. At the annual school festival a collection was made to the benefit of the music band, until 1888, from whence on the parish granted the music band an annual amount of $50.00 from the [church] cash. On March, 24th, 1894 the music band decided to buy new instruments as the old ones weren’t quite useable any more. In 1894, again, the old instruments were replaced by new ones. In 1883 the first uniforms were ordered, in 1898 the second ones, and this year, on occasion of the twenty-fifth jubilee of the music band, the third ones. Mr. Julius Sohrweide, one of the founders of the club, still is an active member. The founders were: Julius Sohrweide Simon Schurr William Plinsky August Kirchner Fred. Köbke August Haupt Hermann Schmiedicke Wm. Mahnke Joseph Mahnke Christ. Mahnke John Hardow Louis Ungrodt John Grotheer Emil Schmidtmann Hermann Rosinsky Christ. Kansier Karl Brick August Leverenz Geo. Lenze Karl Brey [page 29] The conductors during the twenty-five years were: Mr. J. Eberle, the teachers Louis Ungrodt, J. W. Rosenthal, C. F. Hartmann and Mr. Emil Sohrweide. The current officials are: President: Ed. Brey Vice-president: Ferd. Kirchner Secretary: Emil Hacker Treasurer: Aug. Oestreich Librarian: Karl Hardow The club totals 17 members as follows: Emil Sohrweide Julius Sohrweide Ed. Brey Aug. Oestreich Ferd. Kirchner Louis Serrahn W. Hellermann Kempfert Hermann Kohls Otto Weber Paul Kohls Emil Hacker Henry Wernecke Karl Hardow Walter Gielow Ed. Brey jr. Karl Nichols - Association for Mutual Support at Fire-Loss Formed of members of the First German Ev. Luth. Church at Manitowoc, Wis. On February, 18th, 1889 the first meeting concerning this association was held in the presence of about 40 parishioners. They decided: to carry on this topic, to elaborate a constitution, and to hold the next meeting on February, 25th. In this meeting on February, 25th were elected as officials: Theodor Schmidtmann, president; Christian Mahnke, secretary; Heinrich Kansier, treasurer. The town was divided in six districts, for each of which a director was elected. The limits of the districts are made up, as follows: 1. district: north by the river, west by 10th St. 2. district: north by Marshal Rd, east by 10th St. 3. district: south by Marshal Rd, east by 10th St., west by 15th St. [page 30] 4. district: south by Marshal Rd., east by 15. St., north by the river 5. district: south and west by the river, north by Park St. 6. south by Park St. The first directors in the given districts were in the 1st district: Karl Brick, in the 2nd August Müller, in the 3rd Hermann Strothoff, in the 4th August Behn, in the 5th Hermann Rosinsky, and in the 6th August Brey. Of course the beginning was hard. But the founders were so much convinced of the possibility and the advantage of such an association, that everyone was willing even to sign and deposit a note of $25.00 so that in case of emergency cash money should be at hand immediately - every new member did the same. One hoped admittently to be able to pay back such money from the cash box later on, but this obligation never had to be exercised. After all, this determination isn’t valid any more since the constiution was revised in 1898. The realm in which the association carries on its business is a very restricted one, for membership is possible - as is hinted at by the name of the association - only for those persons who are regular members of the First German Ev. Luth. Church in Manitowoc, Wis. and for men whose wives are parishioners. The growth of the association has been - under the given circumstances - a rapid one: In January 1892 the cash box contained $940.90, in January 1898 it was already $4,402.27, in January 1905 $9,758.82 in cash. This big cash on hand is easily explained by the fact that in the 16 years only $142.50 had to be disbursed for fire loss. At the end of the year of 1904, 269 policies were operative, the sum insured amounted to $224,888.00. The current officials are: August Pohl, president Christian Kansier, vice-president Herm. Strothoff, secretary Heinrich Kansier, treasurer Fried. Rockhoff, director of 1st district Christian Kansier, director of 2nd district Emil Stahl, director of 3rd district [page 31] August Behn, director of 4th district Johann Wolter, director of 5th district Karl Engel, director of 6th district - The Mixed Choir It was around the year of 1870 when teacher J. Grotheer invited a number of young people for a meeting in his home. The purpose of this meeting was to talk over the foundation of a mixed choir. The society came into being, and it was practiced regularly. The first anthem to be rehearsed and then performed in the service was "Großer Gott, wir loben Dich". The following persons were among the first members of the society: gents J. Mahnke, Fr. Mahnke, C. Schlei, and Chr. Kansier; ladies L. Rath and H. Brandt. Teacher Grotheer conducted the choir until 1891. In the year following when teacher W. H. Amling conducted two choirs were founded, a men’s choir and the current mixed choir "Frohsinn" [approximately: joyance, gleefulness]. Exclusively young people are members of the mixed choir, its aim and task is to foster chant, spiritual as well as secular, furthermore to promote a deeply conjoint life within the community. Once a week the choir gathers for rehearsals and from time to time performs a chant during services. Teacher Amling conducted the choir until 1899. After that teacher Serrahn was in charge of it a certain time, until the present conductor, teacher D. Vogel, arrived and took over conductorship. The following persons served the choir as presidents: C. Schlei, W. Schellin, W. Sampe, A. Sohrweide, J. Mahnke, C. Hardow, and J. Raddatz. At present the following persons participate in the choir: Sopranos: B. Greunke, Louise and Lilie Strothoff, M. Schurr, J. and E. Däke, O. and E. Hoyer, L. and M. Feuerpfeil, C. Hobus, E. Schäfer, and E. Kawalle. Altos: J. Schäfer, E. Horstmann, J. Sohrweide, L. Mahnke, L. Kurth, A. Zahn, O. Dünow, B. Rosinski, S. Franke, and E. Schulz. Tenors: J. Raddatz, J. Rohan, A. Kempfert, W. Schäfer, vice- president [fem.]; H. Dittmar, cashier; Louise Strothoff, secretary; A. Arnemann, librarian; D. Vogel, conductor. - Men’s choir "Gemütlichkeit" This choral society was founded on May, 5th, 1892. Most of its founders were up to this point members of the mixed choir. The aim of the society is "to foster chant - the spiritual as well as the secular, and to promote a deeply conjoint life within the community. The spiritual chant is cultivated to perform from time to time on Sundays and on festive occasions in order to embellish the service." To cover current expenses all members have to pay an entrance fee of 50 ct and a monthly fee of 15 ct. Beginning with 1889 the parish levied a yearly collection for the benefit of the choirs. In 1893, however, the choirs forwent this collect. The first officials of the society were: president John Mahnke, vice- president August Pohl, secretary E. M. Carstens, treasurer August Behn, conductor teacher W. Amling, librarian August Behn. Conductors of the society were: Teachers W. Amling and D. Vogel. The following gents have served the society as presidents: John Mahnke, 1892 - 1894 Karl Müller, 1894 - 1897 August Behn, 1897 - 1898 August Pohl, 1898 - 1899 E. M. Carstens, 1899 - 1900 Heinrich Groth, 1900 - 1902 Fr. Rockhoff, 1902 - The present officials of the society are: president Fr. Rockhoff, vice- president August Rietz, secretary Karl Höfner, treasurer Bernhard Jacobs, conductor Louis Serrahn, vice-conductor teacher W. Hellermann, librarian Otto Kloszinsky. [page 33] The society now totals 37 members as follows: First Tenors: John Mahnke Karl Höfner August Rietz Norbert Wiszmann Johann Raddatz John Stahl Adolf Wolf Ernst Fehrmann Second Tenors: August Pohl Karl Schlei Heinrich Wernecke Bernhard Jacobs Gustav Tegen C. Mack Honorary members are: Pastor Karl Machmüller, John Dramm, and John Schäfer. - Women’s Society of the Parish The judgements on the right [of existence] of any societies in christian communities differ widely: One hints at number and size of societies as witness of a living community, or as indications of decline. These opinions so different on clubs and societies show that societies in their different settings haven’t proved as a blessing everywhere. But may be so only because their aims and ends were unjustified in the realm of a christian community, because they assumpted rights or duties of the community. These evils can be prevented and the encroachments averted without the necessity to abolish all societies, i.e. closed associations, in the realm of the church. It is alright when the women of the parish, without having founded a society - out of a vivid concern of the work [page 34] of the intern and extern mission, of the orphan societies, or any other work of love within or outside the church, gather to listen to a lecture and to take a share with their talents. But the right even of these free and informal conventions presupposes that the pertaining persons by their work do not want to detach a duty from the community or deny it a right. Out of such view also the local women’s society was founded. "The aim of the society shall be: united charity on the part of the women for God’s kingdom within and outside the parish by volunteering and contributions, and fosterage of the sisterly communitiy among the women of the parish." "But the society is fulfilling his work of support in the parish only under the guidance of the pastor and the attendant of paupers." At the foundation of the society, on March, 5th, 1896, 24 women were present, of which 19 are members still. Today about 70 women are part of the society. It meets monthly every 2nd thursday at 2 o’clock p.m. in the societies' room in the school-house. Guests always are welcome. The present officials are: Mrs Pastor [sic] M. Machmüller, pres. Mrs M.
