MINNA BARTHEL MRS. J. BARTELS OF CLEVELAND IS THE VICTIM Threw Carpet Over Smoking Kitchen Oil Stove Which Exploded, Ignited Clothes Mrs. John Bartels of Cleveland, a mother of three small children, was burned to death yesterday at the family home there when an oil stove which she had been using and which did not burn well, exploded, igniting her clothing. Mrs. Bartels instead of attempting to extinguish the flames which were rapidly enveloping her form, rushed to the second floor of her home where her youngest child lay asleep. She was fearful that the house would burn down and thinking more of her babe than of herself, she carried the child to safety outside the house and then screamed to neighbors for aid. When the neighbors came she had been burned beyond all hope of recovery, every stitch of her clothing having been burned from her body, nothing but her shoes remaining on her feet. Neighbors found her lying on the ground, moaning in death agonies. She died at 5:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, a matter of four hours after the accident occurred. Rug on Stove Tells Tale. Mrs. Bartels, according to her husband who conducts the Manitowoc Storage Battery company on York street, had been using the kitchen oil stove which did not burn well. A rug which was found to have been thrown over the stove was mute evidence of what had occurred. Mrs. Bartels had turned the stove down as far as possible when it continued smoking. Then, to prevent the room from filling with kerosene fumes, she threw a rag carpet from the floor over the stove. The stove exploded at this juncture, the flames licking up from beneath the rug and igniting her clothing as she stood nearby. Her husband stated today that he had left the home for his business in Manitowoc and that he presumed the stove exploded shortly after his leaving or at about 2 o'clock. Sacrificed Self. Mrs. Bartels was 35 years of age. Her tragic death came as a shock to the neighborhood. Her mother love which compelled her to sacrifice herself for the life of one of her children will live long in the memory of the community and will be told and retold to children as a shining example of a great and undying love in which the greatest sacrifice was unhesitatingly made. Mrs. Bartels is survived by her husband and the three children, Violet, 12, Ruhle 8 and Elizabeth 4. It was Elizabeth whom the mother carried from the second floor where she was sleeping to safety outside the house. She is also survived by her sisters Mrs. Elizabeth Arahando, Abbotsford, Mrs. Lydia Tutloff, Curtis; Mrs. Thelma Culbertson, Greenleaf and Mrs. Alvina Siebert of Appleton, also one brother George of Abbotsford. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at Cleveland, the Rev. Springling to perform the last sad rites. (no dates or name of newspaper on this obituary)

The deceased (nee Achenbach) was born 11 June 1825 in Lower Dieten, Kingdom of Hesse-Darmstadt, and came to America in 1853, on 6 July of that same year settling in Manitowoc with 2 brothers and a sister. In August of that same year she married above named Mr. Born, the marriage producing 8 children of whom 6 still are living. The couple lived for many years on a farm in Town Newton, moved to Fond du Lac County in 1885, but returned to Manitowoc County in 1894 where they have lived ever since. JOHANN HEINRICH BORN From Der Nord Westen, 07 Jan. 1904: What his relatives have anticipated for several weeks finally took place on Tues. last week when Johan Heinrich Born, an old and esteemed resident of our county, closed his tired eyes in the last long sleep. The deceased was born 14 Mar. 1815 in Niederndielen, Upper-Hesse, Bez. Biedenkoff and came to America in 1849, first living 3 yrs. in Southampton, Long Island, New York. On 21 Oct. 1852 he traveled back to Germany, then returned to America in Apr. 1853. He came to Manitowoc County and settled in Town Newton, which was then a wilderness, and established a farm. On 21 Aug. of that same year he married Miss Eva Achebach, his now surviving 79-yr. old widow. He worked his farm until 1885 when he relocated to Fond du Lac County and operated a farm there. In 1894 he returned to Manitowoc County residing with his son Adam who operates a farm in Town Centerville. About 2 mos. ago the robust man fell ill and for the past week it had seemed to his sons that the end was near. His death was due to a combination of illnesses which afflict the very elderly. A good man has been lost with the death of Mr. Born who was one of our oldest friends and has been a subscriber ever since this paper was established. May he rest in peace. In addition to his above mentioned widow, he is survived by 6 sons, namely, Adam, Heinrich and Louis in Centerville; John and Jakob in Newton; and August in Collins, as well as 17 grandchildren. One son and a daughter preceded their father in death. The funeral took place New Year's Day at the Saxon Cemetery in Centerville under the direction of Pastor Sprengling. The 6 sons carried their father's casket to the grave.
THERESA DASSLER (sent by family researcher/see contributor page) Theresa Dassler Obit With the death of Mrs. Theresa (Grandma) Dassler, 91 at 7 p.m. Sunday, the village of Centerville lost its "oldest citizen". Mrs. Dassler, a pioneer in this country, celebrated her 91st birthday last August 25. She has been ill for some time. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the home where she died, and burial will be made in the Saxon cemetery with the Rev. Carl Schmahl officiating. Mrs. Dassler, nee Theresa Hedrich, was born Aug 25, 1845, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Hedrich. At the time her family lived at Saxonweimer, Germany. Her parents, herself and six brothers and sisters came to America when she was seven years of age. Her youngest sister at that time was an infant of but three weeks. Trip to America After a perilous voyage of nine weeks the family landed at Philadelphia and for two years they lived in Pennsylvania, moving to Wisconsin in 1854. Their trip to Wisconsin was made by boat through the Great Lakes. Upon their arrival in Sheboygan at the little wooden pier they moved to a tract of land located about four miles west of the present site of Centerville on the Union road. At the age of 15, Mrs. Dassler went to Superior where she did housework. Her earnings supported both her and her brother who was sending his monthly earnings from work in the mines to the family. Marriage and Family When she was 20, Miss Hedrich became Mrs. Ernest Dassler. He preceeded her in death in 1913. To Mr. and Mrs. Dassler were born seven children, three of whom are living. The living are Mrs. (Alma) F.A. Jawort, Centerville; Mrs. (Anna) Gustave Bahr, Milwaukee, and Oscar of the village of Newton. Those preceeding their mother in death were: Mrs. Ida Hintz, who died December 10,1914; Herman, passing away on June 6, 1919; Louis on June 14, 1925 and Frank on August 6, 1934. In addition to raising her own family of seven children, Grandma Dassler also reared three grand-children, Victor and Edna Dassler, the latter now Mrs. Ed Karstedt of Milwaukee, and Althea Bahr, the present Mrs. Matthewson. Victor Dassler died in 1920. Descendants of Mrs. Dassler also include a host of grandchildren, nephews, nieces and thirteen great-grandchildren. Proud of Her Garden One of the points of pride in Centerville was Grandma Dassler's garden. Her philosophy of life was simple, but one that sounded a note of encouragement to those who were apt to feel that life had been rather severe with them. "Contentment," said Mrs. Dassler, "is the keynote of happiness, and one can be happy in a hovel or a palace providing the mind thinks of the pleasanter and more worthwhile things of life instead of dwelling on hardships." Regardless of your misfortune Mrs. Dassler beleived that you can always find some one who is having just a little bit harder time than you have. Until a year ago, Grandma Dassler had enjoyed the best of health, but on April 24, 1933, she had the misfortune of falling and injuring her hip and as a result was unable to walk for a long time. On Mrs. Dassler's fifty-sixth bithday, which occurred thirty-three years ago, her daughter, now Mrs. F.A. Jawort, was wed.

ERNEST G. JAEHNING DESPONDENT FARMER ENDS LIFE WITH GUN E. Jaehnig Jr., Aged 39, Centerville, Blows Top of Head Off In Barn This Morning Despondent over financial matters, which his wife said, had preyed on his mind for some little time, Ernst Jaehnig, Jr., aged 39, town of Centerville farmer ended his life, in the barn on his farm shortly after eight o'clock this morning by placing the muzzle of his shot gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger. The charge blew the entire top of his head off. His body was discovered by his wife, who, hearing the shot from the kitchen of the home, where she was preparing breakfast rushed to the barn to find the body of her husband on the barn floor. Dr. Reinhardt of Centerville was summoned, but an examination showed that Jaehnig's death had been almost instantaneous. He notified Coroner W.G. Kemper of this city who left for the farm, which is located a mile north and a mile west of St. Wendel to the town of Centerville. The fact that there were no powder burns on the face leads to the theory that Joehnig placed the muzzle of the gun in his mouth and there managed to reach down with one hand and pull the trigger. The gun lay a short distance from the body on the barn floor. No Inquest The coroner announced that it was a clear case of suicide and that there would be no inquest. The body was removed to the W. Ahrens funeral home at Howard's Grove, Sheboygan county. Funeral arrangements had not been completed but will probably be held Thursday or Friday. The plight of the widow of the dead man was a sad one. She is left with four small children on the homestead farm by the suicide of husband and father. Before her marriage she was Miss Helen Roehl of Centerville. Mrs. Jaehnig told the coroner when he visited the farm this morning that she had noticed that her husband had been despondent the past few weeks and seemed to be bothered with financial worries. He said nothing, however, when he arose as usual this morning and proceeded to the barn to do the morning chores. Her fears were aroused when she heard a shot from the barn and hurrying out found her husband dying with the top of his head blown off. Born On Same Farm The deceased was born and brought up on the same farm where he ended his life this morning. Besides his widow and four small children he is also survived by two brothers, Rudolph of Two Rivers, Route 1, Alfred of Sheboygan, and two sisters, Mrs. Edward Sixel of Marathon City, Wis., and Mrs. Walter Sommers of Mississippi. Ernst Jaehnig, Sr., father of the deceased, also survives. He resides on a farm in Centerville, near the one occupied by his son. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. March 22, 1931 P. 14
