GEORGE BRICK HIS LIFE STORY WAS SAD Unfortunate End of George Brick, Centerville Man, Found Dead In His Home HAD LIVED LONELY EXISTENCE Since Death of Mother a Few Months Ago, Has Had Changed Greatly— Garbled Reports Gave Sensation Garbled reports that were given sensational coloring by the excitement of the purveyor agitated official and newspaper circles of the city Friday to the belief that a murder mystery had developed at Centerville. Thorough investigation revealed the foundation of the harrowing tale to have been somewhat tragic death of George Brick, for years a resident of the town, who was found dead in his home during the morning. The error in the original report which gave rise to the theory of foul play was that the victim was unknown and that marks of violence appeared on the body. The death of Brick was caused by heart failure and the face was somewhat scarred by having come in contact with the stove upon which the unfortunate man had apparently fallen when sustaining the fatal affection of the heart. Brick had been living alone since the death of his mother which occurred October 6 of last year and for some time past had not enjoyed good health. Of late he had indulged in the free use of intoxicants and this, combined with exposure resulting from his lonely life, had undermined his constitution and vitality. During the several days past neighbors acquainted with his condition sought to befriend him but he refused to accept of their hospitality or kindness. It was while making an effort to assist the unfortunate man that John Sachse made the discovery of his death. Mr. Sachse visited the premises occupied by Brick Friday morning at 11 o’clock and found the rear door open. Being unable to secure a response to his repeated rappings for admission Sachse entered the house and made the discovery of the dead body. Brick was reclining in an arm chair near the stove with the body in a falling position. Blood appeared on the floor and stove and there was an abrasion upon the nose of the corpse. A physician was summoned and later notification was made to authorities here. Evidence of witnesses given at the inquest which was conducted by Coroner Meany before Justice F.W. Boettcher late in the afternoon satisfactorily explained the manner of death and the causes leading up to it. It was adduced that for several months Brick had been without the nourishment of a warm meal and had lived a life of loneliness and isolation from his neighbors that had entailed considerable sufferings of mind and body. There were circumstances to support the theory that he had been stricken with heart failure at a time when he was about to occupy his chair near the stove and had fallen back to the position in which the body was found. Dr. Herrigers, who was first summoned, gave testimony to the effect that death was due to heart failure and the jury consisting of Gottlieb Mill, J.A. Gartsky, W. Strattman, F.J. Sachse, Al. G. Keune and Rudolph Hinz returned a verdict of “death due to natural causes and no person responsible.” District Attorney Hougen who was awaiting the result of the investigation here was immediately notified of the verdict. There is pathos to the life story of George Brick that will awaken sympathy for his unfortunate death. For years he was a resident of the town of Meeme and was one of the industrious and successful young farmers of that section. Removing to Centerville the young man devoted his attention and energies to the support and care of his aged mother until the time of her death last year when he apparently lost interest in life and became morose and absented himself from the companionship of his neighbors and friends. Although possessed of some means, Brick denied himself the very necessities of life and it was this denial that led to his untimely end. He was 41 years of age and a bachelor. Property aggregating a value of perhaps $3000 is left by the deceased, there being an undivided estate of his parents of $1700 and the personal property of his own. The body will be interred at Centerville. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, February 15, 1902, Page 1 ********* From Der Nord Westen, 20 Feb. 1902: From Centerville it is reported that Geo. Brick, a prominent resident of that town, was found dead in his house Fri. morning. The deceased formerly lived in Town Meeme but for the last many years has been in Centerville where he handled his aged mother’s farm. His mother died last year, since which event Brick lost all interest in life. A coroner’s inquest determined that he died of a heart attack. He was 44. VIRGINIA LOOSE CHASENSKY Virginia (Ginny) Loose Chasensky, age 83, was called home to heaven on Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Shady Lane Care Center in Manitowoc. Ginny was born on July 8, 1926, in Milwaukee, the daughter of John and Ida (Parlow) Porte. She graduated the class of 1944 from Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, and afterward worked as a secretary for a neon sign manufacturer. It was at this company where she met and fell in love with her first husband, Earl L. Loose. They married in September 1947. In 1956, the couple purchased a tavern and moved to Newton. Together, they operated Earl and Ginny's Ye Old Tap until Earl passed away on March 27, 1966. Two years later, through close mutual friends, Ginny was introduced to Raymond Chasensky. Raymond, a widower from his loving wife, Anne (Kopidlansky) Chasensky, had six children. On August 7, 1968, Ginny and Ray were married and, together, they and their children became one very large family — fondly referred to as "hers, mine and ours!" He and Ginny continued to run the tavern until 1972, when they sold it and moved to their "little piece of paradise" on Newton Road. Ginny had many unique experiences in her life and was never afraid to boldly go where few women of her time would have ventured. She played high school women's basketball in the early 1940's when there were not many women competitors. In the 1950's, she went to work in the factory, when many women were stay-at-home wives and mothers. As a young widow in the 1960's, Ginny single-handedly raised her children and, at the same time, operated the tavern. After selling the tavern, she returned to work at Mirro Aluminum Company in the Boat Plant Division. She retired from Mirro in 1988. Virginia was a 53-year member of St. John and St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cleveland, Wis. Her other past affiliations include the Manitowoc County Tavern League, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary (Cleveland) and the US Steel Workers Union. She was also a very talented artist and loved to draw cutout dolls and clothes for her daughters and granddaughters. Ginny was also known for her prolific letter-writing and card-sending — she never forgot birthdays, weddings or other special occasions. Many of the cards contained her signature $5.00 bill. However, more than all her personal and professional skills and accomplishments, Ginny loved and cherished her family. She was immensely proud of her nine children and sons and daughter-in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. More often than not, upon meeting or visiting with her, Ginny would relate a story about one of her kids or grandkids. She utilized various modes of transportation (buses, plane, automobiles and even moving vans) to travel all over the country to visit sons, daughters and grandchildren. She deeply cared about and reached out to other people throughout her life and, consequently, was blessed with many friends and acquaintances. Ginny will be greatly missed by all. Survivors include her sons, Roger (Marlene) Loose, Newton; Jeffrey (Chris) Loose, Manitowoc; Raymond Chasensky (Kelly Dettman) Peshtigo; Thomas (Cheryl) Chasensky, Braidwood, Ill.; and Tony (Joy) Chasensky, St. Paul, Minn.; daughters: Cheryl (Jerry) Loose Spragg, Virginia, Minn.; Susan Blaufuss, Prophetstown, Ill.; and Mary (Bob) Steele, El Paso, Texas. Precious grandchildren: Becky Chasensky, Sheila (Craig) Sprang, Eddie Joe Franel, Bob Franel, Mike Chasensky, Scott (Rina) Meyers, Tracy (Jason) Tucker, Jenna Loose, Eric (Heather) Machia, Nikki Meier, Michelle Chasensky, Mary Chasensky, Brian Chasensky and Hallie Chasensky and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews and dear friends, especially Ann Smaglik. Ginny was preceded in death by her parents, husbands: Earl and Raymond; brothers and sisters-in-law: Roland (Kay) Porte and Elmer (Irma) Porte: daughter and son-in-law: Carol Chasensky Franel and Edward Franel; grandson, Joey Chasensky; and granddaughter, Serena Loose. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at St. John and St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cleveland. Pastor David Endorf will officiate, and burial will follow at St. Johannes Cemetery in Cleveland. Friends may call at the church on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, from 10 a.m. until the hour of service. ROLAND G. DASSLER Roland Dassler was taken to the hospital at Sheboygan Friday evening. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thursday, May 7, 1914 P. 4 ******** Last week we reported that Roland Dassler was seriously injured by an ax striking him on the abdomen. This week we must report that Roland died early Wednesday morning of last week. He was operated upon but his condition was too critical and the injury too serious to hope for recovery. He was buried at Centerville on Saturday afternoon, Rev. Sprengling officiating. That he was a true young friend and a good son was shown by the fact that this was the largest funeral held here for a long time. It is indeed sad, when in the prime of life, one has to meet with such a condition and leave friends and relatives to see what the next world has in store for us. Indeed, it is sad for parents, but when we consider the many hardships and troubles that were waiting him,, we cannot help but feel as though He had chosen the better part for Roland. He is now over his earthly sufferings and we hope,, is resting peacefully. To his parents, we would wish them to be consoled by the thoughts, "In Heaven we meet again." Manitowoc Pilot - Thurs., May 14, 1915 ******** Roland Dassler of Centerville, died as a result of injuries which he sustained when he was struck in the abdomen by an axe which he was using and which slipped from his hands. An operation was performed in hope of saving his life but it was to no avail. He was one of the well known young men of the town and his popularity was attested by one of the larges funerals ever held there. Manitowoc Daily Herald - May 15, 1914 - page 2

DORIS M. DUELLMAN Our beloved wife, inspiring mother and compassionate grandmother, Doris M. Duellman, a village of Cleveland resident, took her Lord's hand on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center. Medical struggles throughout her life were obstacles that she overcame because of her everlasting love for her family and deep desire to be with them until the very end when her body became too weak for her final battle against pneumonia. Doris was born Sept. 25, 1937, in the town of Newton, Manitowoc County, a daughter of the late Edward F. and Lucile M. (Wernecke) Jost. Doris was a 1955 graduate of Sheboygan Central High School. She was united in marriage to her soulmate Edward N. Duellman on March 2, 1957, at St. John & St. Peter Ev. Lutheran Church in Cleveland. Doris' sense of humor, zest for life and unfailing love for her Lord, her family and her friends could be seen in every walk of her life. She appreciated the simple things in life: the smell of flowers, the birds at the window, the warmth of the sun and spending quality time with her family during celebrations and their cottage in northern Wisconsin, especially taking paddleboat rides with her grandchildren. Her joy was seeing a smile on the faces of those around her. Her strong faith and devotion was evident through her activities within the church. Even though motherhood was her main priority, she had been a rural letter carrier for the Cleveland Post Office for more than 17 years retiring in 1998. Surviving Doris is her loving husband, Edward of 52 years. She will be deeply missed and in their hearts forever by her two daughters, Deb (Ted) Wehrman, Sheboygan; and Dawn (David) Duellman-Arndt, Waukesha. Her four grandchildren, Zachary, Karina, Jacob and Matthew were the highlight of her life and theirs. In addition, her brother, James Jost, Cleveland; and a sister, Karen (James) Gutknecht, Milwaukee. Along with her parents, Doris was also preceded in death by her brother, Richard Jost. All who knew Doris are invited to attend a celebration and remembrance of her life on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at 1 p.m. at St. John & St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cleveland. The Rev.
