WALLACE BELITZ Sheboygan Press: "Wallace Belitz" 2 Aug 1951 Wallace Belitz, 49, passed away at Sheboygan Memorial hospital Wednesday. He was born on May 27, 1902, in Cleveland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Belitz. He attended elementary school in Centerville and attended Washington High school in Manitowoc. On June 25, 1927, he married Miss Anita Duessing in St. Paul's Lutheran church, Sheboygan. In 1921 he took over the Standard Oil agency, Cleveland, and was in the business until 1929 when he took over the Belitz hardware store as sole owner. Survivors are his wife; his mother; a brother, Milton, of Cleveland; and three sisters, Mrs. M. (Edna) Hess of Two Rivers, Mrs. Forrest (Sylvia) Duessing of Sheboygan and Mrs. Herbert (Erla) Schachtschneider of Milwaukee. His father and a sister, Mrs. Hugo (Leora) Stoltenberg, preceded him in death. Mr. Belitz was a member of the Hardware Implement association and served on the consistory of St. John and St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran church, Cleveland, for three years. Funeral services will be held at the Stoltenberg Funeral chapel, Cleveland, at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Eldon Bode will officiate and burial will be made in the family lot in St. John's cemetery, Hika. Friends may call at the funeral chapel from Friday noon until 11 a.m. Saturday and then at the chruch until the time of the services. The Belitz Hardware store will be closed until after the funeral. F. WILHELM BOETTCHER From Der Nord Westen, 08 Oct. 1908: Death Tuesday last week in Centerville of F.W. Boettcher of heart disease with which he had suffered a long time. The deceased was born 1834 in Saxony and came to Centerville in 1850 where he has since lived. He leaves a widow and 4 children. The funeral was held Friday.


OTTO BORN Otto J. Born, 75, of the Village of Cleveland, died Wednesday morning at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan, where he had been a patient since Monday following a coronary. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John and St. Peter Lutheran Church, Cleveland. The Rev. Henry Koch will officiate and burial will be in St. Johannes Cemetery, Cleveland. Mr. Born was born April 7, 1896, in the Town of Centerville, son of the late Adam and Ida Lautenschleager Born. He married Irene Dreger Nov. 23, 1918, in the Town of Rockland. The couple farmed in the Town of Newton until 1925, coming to the Village of Cleveland. His wife preceded him in death Nov. 7, 1966. He was employed at Cleveland Hardware Co., Belitz Hardware Co. and Lakeside Canning Co., Cleveland. He was a member of St. John and St. Peter Lutheran Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Paul (Evelyn) Steinpreis, of Winneconne, Wis., a brother, Edwin, of Sheboygan, a grandson. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) EVA BRICK From Der Nord Westen, 24 Oct. 1901: Old age debility took the life Wed. last week of 85-yr. old Mrs. Eva Brick in Centerville. She is survived by one son and her funeral took place on Sun.


GEORGE BRICK From Der Nord Westen, 20 Feb. 1902: From Centerville it is reported that Geo. Brick, a prominent resident of that town, was found dead in his house Fri. morning. The deceased formerly lived in Town Meeme but for the last many years has been in Centerville where he handled his aged mother’s farm. His mother died last year, since which event Brick lost all interest in life. A coroner’s inquest determined that he died of a heart attack. He was 44. (Long article)


LOUIS DASSLER Louis Dassler, 57, well-known blacksmith of Centerville, passed away suddenly at 9:45 p.m. Sunday at his home of heart stroke. Mr. Dassler lived but a few minutes after he was stricken. The deceased was born in Centerville on April 30, 1868, and was married to Lena Grundmeir. He was a blacksmith for the last 30 years. Besides his widow, Mr. Dassler is survived by one son, Alfred, who makes his home with his parents. His aged mother, Mrs. Theresa Dassler, 80 years old of here, 2 brothers, Frank of here and Oscar at Sheboygan, 2 sisters, Mrs. Gustave Bahr, and Mrs. Ferdinand Jawort of here. His father, Ernst Dassler preceded him in death on Aug 1, 1913. a son Roland died May 6, 1914, his brother Herman Dassler on June 6, 1919, and his sister, Mrs. Gust. Hintz died Dec. 19, 1914. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at p.m.(sic) from the late home in Centerville, and interment will be made in the Centerville cemetery.


ERNESTINE DOERSCH Johann Friedrich Doersch and his wife Ernestine Boettcher Doersch are the two buried here. Their dates are correct. I have independent sources for their birth and death dates (including the church records from Bischofsgrün, Bavaria, where JF Doersch was baptized. JW Doersch is his older brother. Johann Doersch (1804-1872) who is buried here is his father. The Adolph Doersch you have here was his son. So this is a family group. (sent in by researcher/see contributors page)


J. FRIEDRICH DOERSCH From Der Nord Westen, 02 Nov. 1893: Death in Town Centerville last Thurs. of Friedrich Doersch, son of Michael Doersch. The deceased was 31 yrs. of age and died of kidney disease. The funeral took place Sun. in the Lutheran Cemetery in Centerville.


JOHN W. DOERSCH From Der Nord Westen, 04 Oct. 1900: Death in Cleveland Thurs. last week following an illness of several years of Mr. W. Doersch as a result of a hemorrhage. The deceased was born 09 Oct. 1836 in Bayreuth, Bavaria and came to America in 1852. After living a year in the state of N.Y., he moved to Wisconsin. He is survived by 4 children and several sisters. The funeral was held Sat. afternoon.

OTTO DOERSCH From Der Nord Westen, 26 Nov. 1896: On Sun. John W. Doersch in Town Centerville, received the news that his son Otto Doersch had died in the State of North Carolina. He was 30 yrs. of age. The body was brought to Centerville and buried Wed.


JOHANN DUESSING From Der Nord Westen, 29 July 1909: Death Wednesday evening last week in Town Centerville of John Duesing of throat cancer. The deceased, who was born 1858 in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, came to America as an 11-year old boy. He was a veteran of the Civil War. He leaves his widow, 3 sons and 5 daughters. (Note: He couldn't have been a veteran of the Civil War if he was b. in 1858, the newspaper may have said 1838 and been misread. Sometimes letters and numbers aren't real clear.)


CHRISTIAN W.F. EHRHARDT From Der Nord Westen, 11 June 1908: Death Monday last week in Centerville of 71-year old Christian Erhart after a long illness. The deceased had come to Centerville in 1868 and operated a cartwright business until he had to give it up a few years ago because of illness. The funeral was held Wednesday last week.


JACOB GAUGH Jacob Gaugh/Geb. 13 Oct. 1834/Gest. 19 Dec. 1901, next to: From Der Nord Westen, 26 Dec. 1901: Death in Centerville on Thurs. last week of Jacob Gouch of stomach cancer. He was born 13 Oct. 1834 in Argenthal, near Koblenz, and came to America in (very light print, but might be 1852) and is survived by his widow, one daughter and one grandchild. The funeral was held Mon. with Hubert Falge from here delivering the funeral oration.


KATIE GRIESSMEYER From Der Nord Westen, 15 Mar. 1900: Death 07 Mar. in Chicago of Mrs. Kathe Griessmann, daughter of John Graeber in Centerville, at the age of 28 of consumption. The body was transported to Centerville and buried in the Lutheran Cemetery there on 10 Mar. (Note: I beieve this is the right place for this obit. She is the dau. of John Kraber/Kraeber in the cem.)


GEORG PETER HEINZ From Der Nord Westen, 04 Mar. 1909: Death 24 Feb. in Village Hika of Peter Heinz, who was well-known in the entire area. He was born 18 May 1835 in Gödenroth, Kreis Simmern, Rhine Province, came to America in 1853 and was married in Town Centerville with Miss Wilhelmine Boettcher. Mr. Heinz was a soldier during the Civil War serving from 1864 to 1865. One son has preceded him in death. Now surviving are his widow, 3 sons, 2 daughters and 8 grandchildren. His funeral was held Saturday, February 27.


MARIA MARGARETHA HEINZ From Der Nord Westen, 25 Feb. 1897: Death last Fri. in Town Centerville of widow Margaretha Heintz, mother of Peter Heintz and also of widow Emma Nack of Centerville, from old age debility. She reached the age of 83 yrs. 5 mos. Her husband, who died about 12 yrs. ago, was one of the first settlers there. The burial took place last Sun. attended by a great number of neighbors and friends at the Centerville cemetery, led by Pastor Ph. Sprengling. In addition to the 2 mentioned children, the deceased is survived by 14 grandchildren.

REUBEN A. HINTZ Reuben A. Hintz, 58, of 360 Lincoln St., Cleveland, died Wednesday morning at home following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Stoltenberg Funeral Chapel, Cleveland. The Rev. Henry Koch will officiate and burial will be in St. Johannes Cemetery, Cleveland. Mr. Hintz was born April 12, 1913, in the Town of Centerville, son of the late August Hintz and Mrs. Hulda Dehne Hintz. He married Emma Schmidt June 15, 1940, in the Town of Centerville. The couple resided in the Village of Cleveland. He had been employed at the Kohler Co. for the past 16 years. Mr. Hintz was a member of St. John and St. Peter Lutheran Church, Cleveland. Survivors include his wife; three sons; two daughters (Survivors omitted for privacy.) his mother, Mrs. Huldo Hintz of Newton; a sister, Mrs. Marvin Schmitz of Newton and seven grandchildren. ALVINA KEUNE From Der Nord Westen, 04 Oct. 1900: Death Tues. in Centerville last week of Miss Alvine Keune, daughter of Karl E. Keune, following a two year illness with exophthalmic goiter (Graves' disease). The deceased, who was born 09 June 1877, was buried Fri.


CARL KEUNE From Der Nord Westen, 07 Aug. 1902: Mr. Carl Keune, Sr., of Centerville, who was in northern Michigan on a visit to relatives, died there suddenly on Thurs. of old age debility. He had been ill for a long while and had turned over his meal mill to his sons several years ago. He reached the age of 64 yrs. 10 mos. 16 days. He was born in Germany, later came to America and married his late wife in 1864. His well attended funeral was held Sat. at the Lutheran Cemetery in Centerville.


CAROLINE KEUNE From Der Nord Westen, 15 Aug. 1895: Death on 07 Aug., at her home in Centerville, of Mrs. Carolina Keune wife of Carl Keune, Sr., mill owner here. The deceased was born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin in Jan. 1845, married Mr. Keune in 1864, and lived with her husband in this village since 1867. Her death was due to a gastric illness. She is survived by her husband and 10 children. Two of the children are married: Chas. Keune, Jr., and Mrs. Ida Hoops of Detroit. Mrs. Keune's parents survive her, both in their 80's and residents in Town Newton. The funeral took place Fri., 09 Aug. at the city cemetery in Centerville, conducted by the Rev. Phil. Sprengling.


MARGARET KRABER From Der Nord Westen, 22 Mar. 1906: Mrs. Margaret Kraeber, wife of village Centerville resident John Kraeber, died last week of heart dropsy (Herzwassersucht). The deceased was born 09 July 1829 in the Prussian Rhine Province and came to America in 1886. She leaves 4 children in addition to her husband. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon.


WILHELMINE LEVENDOSKE From Der Nord Westen, 20 Feb. 1896: Death last Fri. of the wife of Mr. John Levondowsky, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Nitsche in Town Centerville of breast illness and dropsy. She was 50 yrs. old and is survived by her husband, 3 grown sons, and 3 married daughters. The funeral took place last Sun. at the Centerville Cemetery conducted by Pastor Sprengling.


MARIA LUECKER From Der Nord Westen, 13 Dec. 1900: Death Sun. morning at 1 a.m. in Centerville following a long illness of Mrs. Christoph Luecker nee Marie Brust of pneumonia. She was born in Koeln in 1840 and came to America in 1847 and in 1860 married her husband, who survives her. There were 8 living children, 6 sons and 2 daughters. The funeral was Tues. afternoon in Centerville from the Lutheran Church conducted by Pastor Sprengling.


CHRISTIAN NACK From Der Nord Westen, 22 Aug. 1895: (From the correspondent in Centerville, 21 Aug.) Death on 13 Aug., in his home, of Christian Nack of tuberculosis. He was born Oct. 1856, and in 1881 married the widow Loose. She brought several children to the marriage, of whom 2 are still living. Burial was Sat. at the Lutheran Cemetery, led by Rev. P. Sprengling.


BERNADINE PETERS Mrs. Edmund (Bernadine) Peters, 59, of 1547 N. 20th St., Sheboygan, died Monday at University Hospital, Madison. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels, 1202 N. Eighth St., Sheboygan. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Town of Centerville. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, a sister, Mrs. Otto Stein, of Cleveland and 11 grandchildren. CLARA PETERS From Der Nord Westen, 21 Oct. 1909: A 2-month old daughter of Fritz Peters in Centerville died last week and was buried Thursday.


HULDA PIPPERT Mrs. Hulda Pippert, 84, of Cleveland, died Tuesday morning at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital, following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ss. John and Peter Lutheran Church, Cleveland. The Rev. Henry Koch, pastor of the church, will officiate and burial will be in St. Johannes Cemetery, Cleveland. Mrs. Peppert, nee Hulda Altschweger, was born Nov. 1, 1888, at Howards Grove, daughter of the late Fred and Mary Boeldt Altschweger. She was married to Reinhardt Pippert Jan. 25, 1914. The couple resided in the village of Cleveland, where Mr. Pippert operated the Pippert Nursery and Meat Market. He preceded her in death Oct. 25, 1951. She was a member of Ss. John and Peter Lutheran Church and charter member of the Ladies Aid Society of the church. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) Three brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. ELLA L. ROEHRIG RESIDENT WELL KNOWN IN THE COUNTY DIES Mrs. David Roehrig, 38, well known resident of Cleveland, passed away at 2:30 p.m. Monday at St. Nicholas hospital here, following an operation. She had been ill since September 6. Mrs. Roehrig, nee Ella Franzmeier, was born on June 23, 1890, in Newton. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Franzmeier and was married to David Roehrig in 1918. The survivors are the husbend, a daughter, Irma Ells, aged 7 years, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Franzmeier, and one brother at Cleveland. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from St. John and St. Peter's church and interment will be made in the Centerville cemetery. JOHN SACHSE From Der Nord Westen, 29 Mar. 1906: Death in Centerville on Sunday, following a long illness, of John Sachse as the result of a stroke he suffered several months ago. Mr. Sachse, who was 72, came with his parents from Germany in 1852. The family settled in Centerville and the deceased remained there. He operated a shoe shop by himself and was Postmaster for several years as well as filling other elective posts. In the latter stages of the Civil War he served with Co. B of the 45th Infantry Regiment and participated in the battle of Nashville where his regiment did not come under fire but was held in reserve. He is survived by a widow and 7 children. The local post of the G.A.R., of which he was a member, yesterday gave the last salute to its veteran.


LOUIS SACHSE From Der Nord Westen, 16 Aug. 1888: Last Sun., 6 boys from Centerville took a sailboat out onto Lake Michigan; they were Alfred Keune, Gustav Keune, Friedrich Kuhl, and brothers Frank, Wilhelm, and Louis Sachse. The water was quiet, but somehow the boat turned over. The boys clung to the keel for a while, but at some point the boat rolled and threw them into the water again. Louis Sachse disappeared. The other 5 clung to the boat until help arrived. Louis was age 16 and the youngest son of John Sachse, postmaster in Centerville. Search for the body still continues. **************** From Der Nord Westen, 20 Sept. 1888: The body of Louis Sachse was found last Sun. (see entry of 16 Aug.). The body was found about 3-1/2 miles away from the accident and had to be identified by his clothing and contents of the pockets. Justice of the Peace W.T. Albers held an inquest, and it was the verdict of the jury that Louis Sachse accidentally drowned. He was only 16 yrs. 8 mos. and 1 day old and in addition to his parents, left 3 brothers and 5 sisters. He was buried in the Centerville Cemetery with Pastor Sprengling delivering the funeral speech.


RUDOLPH SCHMALFUSS From Der Nord Westen, 31 Dec. 1903: Death in Town Centerville late Sun. night of Rudolph Schmalfuss following a stroke The deceased was born 26 Feb. 1836 in the Kingdom of Saxon-Weimar, and came to America in 1858 settling in Town Centerville where he has lived ever since. He leaves a widow and 3 children. The funeral will be held this afternoon.


ALMA STOLTENBERG Funeral services for Mrs. Reuben Stoltenberg, nee Alma Hake, Cleveland business leader, who died Tuesday, were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Stoltenberg Funeral Chapel in Cleveland. Mr. Roger Marquardt officiated. Pallbearer surnames were: Doersch, Witte, Nennig, Sedlack, Reyer, Thielmann. Mrs. Laverel Vogel and Mrs. Clarence Witte sang accompanied by Mrs. Oscar Lutze at the organ. Burial was in St. John Cemetery in Hika. (edited for living persons) Manitowoc Herald Times, March 1953


CARL STOLTENBERG From Der Nord Westen, 02 Feb. 1905: The condition of Carl Stoltenberg in Cleveland, who has been sick abed for 18 weeks, has recently deteriorated. *************** From Der Nord Westen, 09 Feb. 1905: Carl Stoltenberg of Town Centerville, about whose dangerous illness we reported in our last issue, died Thurs. last week following a 5-mo. illness. Mr. Stoltenberg, who was 38, was born in Centerville and for many years was proprietor of a butter and cheese factory in Cleveland. For the last year he worked in his brother’s store. He leaves a widow and 3 children, as well as 2 brothers and a sister. The funeral was held Sat. afternoon at the cemetery in Centerville Village.


ELISABETH STOLTENBERG From Der Nord Westen, 02 June 1904: Death Sat. in Town Centerville of 75-yr. old Elisabeth Stoltenberg, one of the old settlers of that town. She is survived by 4 children. The funeral took place Tuesday.


PETER STOLTENBERG From Der Nord Westen, 21 Oct. 1897: Death in Cleveland last week of Peter Stoltenberg of a stomach illness. The burial took place Sat. in the Centerville Cemetery. The deceased was born 08 Nov. 1820 in Schleswig-Holstein and married his surviving widow, Elisabeth Rebecka, in 1852. In 1854 he came to America with his small family and settled in Town Centerville.


ROBERT T. VOGEL Robert T. Vogel, 80, of Cleveland, died suddenly this morning at his home. Born Sept. 29, 1875, in the town of Centerville, the son of the late Richard and Pauline Vogel, he was married Nov. 19, 1904, to Bertha Sommer at the Evangelical Church in Town Mosel. Following their marriage the couple moved to Cleveland where he engaged in the carpenter trade. He was active in this work for 53 years and held an interest in the Vogel Lumber Co. at Cleveland since 1911. He was a lifelong member of St. John and St. Peter Lutheran Church of Cleveland. Survivors are his wife; three sons, Norbert, Arwin and Milton of Sheboygan; a daughter, Mrs. John (Verna) Kraemer of Sheboygan; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Kolb of Cleveland, Mrs. Anna Sommer and Mrs. Hugo Wunsch of Mosel and Mrs. Olga Petherick of Milwaukee; and seven grandchildren. His parents, four sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. John and St. Peter Lutheran Church in Cleveland with the Rev. Eldon Bode officiating, and burial will be in St. John Cemetery in Hika. Friends may call at the Stoltenburg Funeral Home in Cleveland from 2 p.m. Friday until 11 a.m. Saturday, and then at the church from noon Saturday until the time of the services. GEORGE WAGNER From Der Nord Westen, 08 Mar. 1900: Death of George Wagner in Town Centerville on Fri., 02 Mar., of peritonitis. He was born 09 Mar. 1860, thus almost reaching the age of 40. He is survived by his wife, a 16-yr. old son and 4 younger daughters. He is also survived by 4 brothers and one sister, Mrs. Ch. Reinemann. The funeral took place Mon. conducted by Pastor Sprengling.


MARIA M. WAGNER From Der Nord Westen, 03 Sep. 1903: Death on 24 Aug. on the farm near Cleveland of Mrs. Georg Wagner, Sr., of old age debility. She was a native of the Rhineland and reach the age of 76 yrs. 11 mos. 18 days. The funeral was conducted by Pastor Sprengling on 27 Aug. at the Lutheran Cemetery in Centerville. Her son Georg died in 1900, but 4 other sons and a daughter still survive.


NORA M. WAGNER Mrs. Nora Wagner, 81, a Town of Centerville resident, died Saturday morning at Morningside Nursing Home, Sheboygan, following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stoltenberg Funeral Chapel, Cleveland. The Rev. Henry Koch will officiate and burial will be in St. Johannes Cemetery, Cleveland. Mrs. Wagner, nee Nora Zill was born April 24, 1891, in the Town of Centerville, daughter of the late Gustave and Emma Wolters Zill. She was married to William Wagner April 23, 1916. The couple resided on the Wagner homestead, where they engaged in farming. Her husband preceded her in death June 9, 1946. She was a member of St. John and St. Peter Lutheran Church, Cleveland. Survivors include three sons, three brothers, Alfred, of Manitowoc, Hilbert of rural Newton and Harry, of Sheboygan; five grandchildren and 11 great grand- children. HELENE M.D. WUENSCH From Der Nord Westen, 22 Aug. 1901: Death Tues. last week in Cleveland from heart trouble of Mrs. Helene Wuensch, widow of the late Theodor Wuensch who passed away 6 yrs. ago. The deceased was born in Schwerin on 14 Nov. 1825 and came to America with her husband in 1847. The family settled in Town Mosel, Sheboygan Co., where they remained until the death of her husband after which she has been residing with her son-in-law, Carl Stoltenberg in Cleveland. She leaves 7 children. The funeral was held Fri. in Centerville.


THEODORE WUENSCH From Der Nord Westen, 19 Mar. 1896: (From the correspondent in Centerville, 17 Mar.) Death on the 15th of Theodor Wunsch. He was born 27 July 1820 and married on 28 Mar. 1848. He was the father of 5 sons and 4 daughters, of whom one son is deceased. He and his wife came to America in 1848, settling for a while in Town Mosel, Sheboygan Co., but for the past 10 yrs. has lived here. The funeral was Wed. afternoon at the Lutheran Cemetery.


ALFRED ZILL Alfred Zill, 84, former village of Cleveland resident, died Friday at Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc, where he had been a patient the past five weeks. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John and St. Peter Lutheran Church, Cleveland. The Rev. Henry Koch, pastor, will officiate and burial will be in St. Johannes Cemetery, Cleveland. Mr. Zill was born Sept. 10, 1888, in the Town of Centerville, son of the late Gustav and Emma Zill. He married Ida Wagner Feb. 16, 1916. The couple resided in the Town of Centerville, where they farmed until their retirement in 1951, when they moved to the Village of Cleveland. Mrs. Zill preceded him in death Mar. 12, 1959. In March, 1970, he made his residence at Shady Lane Home, Manitowoc. He was a member of St. John & St. Peter Lutheran Church. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) A brother and three sisters preceded him in death. Friends may call at Stoltenberg Funeral Chapel, Cleveland, after 3 p.m. Sunday until 11 a.m. Monday and at the church from noon until the hour of service.
