FORMER LOCAL RESIDENTS FROM CANADA VISIT WIS. FOR BIRTHDAY
Nine Canadian residents, all of whom are natives of New Holstein,
arrived in this city in two cars early Wednesday to surprise relatives
and friends after attending the celebration last Sunday of the 100th
birthday anniversary of their aunt and great-aunt, Mrs. Emma Johanna
Peters Schiefer at Owen. Some of these neighbors from across the
border had not returned to this area since leaving her in 1905-1907
to homestead in Saskatchewan, Canada, where they became wheat
farmers.
Included in the group were Henry and Lily Peters Libke of Saskatoon,
their son, Melvin and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Beaumont of Hanley,
son of Mrs. Emma Libke, who is now 85 years of age, and the late Marx
Libke; Mrs. Ella Schults, who was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph
Peters and now resides in Nipawin; and Mr. and Mrs. George Gregg of
Dundurn, the latter being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hass of
this city.
Local residents whom they visited before leaving for their homes on
Saturday included Messrs. and Mmes. Rudolph Jochimsen, Edwin Jochimsen,
Victor Sell, Glendon Libke, Edwin Kind, Edgar Greve. Mmes. Frank Pieper,
Henry Dishaw, Helen Libke and daughter, Viola and Messrs. Albert
Jochimsen and Peter Hass. Before coming here they had also visited
Rudolph Peters and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Peters at Chilton.
The centenarian, who Open House celebration they attended in the dining
hall of St. Katherine's Episcopal church in Owen,is also a native of New
Holstein, having been born near here on Jan. 15, 1867 to Mr. and Mrs.
Herman Peters. She attended the five month winter terms of a rural school
near her home from age six to 13, and then was allowed to attend Carroll
College in Carroll(?), Ia., where she was awarded a teaching certificate
after one year of study. She then taught in a rural school near High
Bridge for one year and nine years in Holstein, Ia.
In 1901 she married William F. Schiefer in Milwaukee. They lived in
Calamus, Ia. for two years, then moved to Lake Andes, S. Dak. where
he worked for five years. In 1908 the couple moved to a dairy farm
in Henning, Minn., and in 1913 to a farm near Detroit Lakes, Minn.,
where they raised purebred Holstein cattle. In 1920 they went to Beach,
N. Dak. and 1921 to Fargo, N. Dak., where Mrs. Shiefer operated two
rooming houses for 21 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Schiefer were the parents of two daughters, Mrs. Gus Miller
of San Jose, Calif., and Mrs. Adolph Haavisto of Owen, with whom she has
resided since 1944. There is also one grandchild, William Miller of
California in her family circle.
