Check back often as new information is added to the site daily.
In
Loving Memory

Shari Anne Milks

Beverly will maintain the website.
These volunteers will do lookups:
When requesting information, please be as specific as you can in your inquiry.
I can always use more volunteers for lookups or helping with the files if anyone wants to offer.
NOTE: Please do not ask for an obit giving only a year. This is asking the volunteer to look through hundreds of newspapers to find an obit.

These volunteers and past volunteers have added tons of information to this site,
and I'm very grateful to them for their generosity.

NOTE: We do not do research for people, only simple lookups.

The Two Rivers Lester Library is paying for the server space for this site.
If anyone would like to donate to help defray the cost, you can send it to:

Let them know it's for the 2manitowoc.com site.
They will continue to keep it online when I am no longer able to work on it.

Notice:
For people who use information from this site for their family trees and want to put a source
down, please use 2manitowoc.com for the source because from time to time I have to split files
and that may change the address you put with the information. You could put 2manitowoc.com
and then name the general section you found what you needed..such as marriages, cemetery
number/name, glass negatives, etc.

Obituaries are linked to the person's name and tombstone photos have a
separate link as do photos of a person.
Note: Until cemeteries were established, many early settlers buried their dead
in the forests and just anywhere in the fields.

MASTER LIST OF SURNAMES IN CEMETERIES
I have numbered the cemeteries, and beside each surname you will find a series
of numbers that correspond with the cemeteries. This should save you having
to look through every one to find the name you're looking for, as the surname will be

What the county and state charge for copies of records

A researcher just sent this information in about where you can get copies of records:
Pre-1907 births, marriages, and deaths for Manitowoc County can also be ordered
through the Green Bay Area Research Center at the Cofrin Library, UWGB, for $5 --
as opposed to the $20 you'd have to pay at the courthouse or through the vital records bureau.
You'll have to google the address of the Cofrin Library. They keep changing it.
That way you will have the latest information from their site.

Cross Index for Wives in the Marriages

What the county and state charge for copies of records

The True marriage bill was passed by the assembly yesterday and with
the Governor's signature, the bill will become a law. It requires that
a license must be obtained five days before the marriage ceremony is
performed. Boys, get a move on yourself if you desire to "fool" the
legislators and escape the fee.
Manitowoc Daily Herald, Manitowoc, Wis. Saturday, April 1, 1899 P.4

Parents should remember the duty which the law imposes on them in
regard to the registering of births that occur in their families. The
law limits the time in which to perform this duty to thirty days.
Frequent notices of this requirement have been given through the city
press, and it is hoped that in the future it will be universally observed.
Manitowoc Daily Herald, Manitowoc, Wis. Thursday, May 25, 1899 P.2

Jan. 18, 1838 - The territory approves an act entitled
"An Act for Applying and Collecting County Revenue". It seems, by this act,
a person could obtain ownership of a piece of property if that person paid
the unpaid property tax for that property. There then seemed to be a long
succession of people who obtained Lot 1 of Section 14 by the means of paying
the unpaid tax. (from Bob Domagalski)

INDEX TO MANITOWOC COURT RECORDS 1849-1905
Also added Newspaper published court notices of Wills, Foreclosures, Bankruptcies, Etc.
Probate records dating back to 1850 are at the Manitowoc County Courthouse.
It costs $4 per name for them to search for someone. $1 per page for copies. No cost to
search in person, copies still $1 per page. Some records are on microfilm. If you need those
printed they have to be sent over to the Manitowoc library so you will not get the copies that
day (if you're doing this in person).
Cofrin library in Green Bay (area research center) also has Manty probate records. They will also
pull them for a fee. Here is what they told me in an email:
We do have Manitowoc probate records that date from 1869. We do not have the actual index, it is
still at the Manitowoc Probate Office. You may either contact them directly or send us the request
via our website. Cofrin Library request forms

The wages of all seamen on the lakes have been increased $5 per month. The
advance was decided upon at a meeting of the Lake Carriers' association and
was made voluntarily. It is said here that within the next few weeks the wages
of all men employed on the lakes will also be advanced, which is due to the
prospects of a good season. A member of the local Seamen's union said yesterday
that he heard of the advance several days ago, but did not believe it until
officially informed. From now on the chief engineers on first-class steamers
with trip expansion engines will receive $110 per month; first mate $80; second
mate, $55. The first mates on first class consorts will get $50. The chief
engineers on second-class steamers will get $95, while the mates on second-class
consorts will get from $35 to $45. On the third-class, or smaller steamers with
high or low pressure engines, the chief engineers will get from $65 to $80 per
month. In all classes of boats, the firemen who work at fitting out and laying
up the steamers, will receive $1.25 per day.
